We find technical people who solve business problems ◆ Transparent Search ◆ Transparent Teams ◆ We are Vocative
When I first started out in recruiting in tech, we did a lot of Adabas/Natural work. And Cobol/CICS/DB2. And there was much hilarity at the idea that Microsoft could ever overtake Netware in the enterprise server space. It's almost 30 years now but it seems like last week. I spent a lot of the day (when I wasn't in the queue for the fax machine) talking about "thin clients" and "fat clients". But it was nothing to do with the scale of the business lunch in the mid 90s (which really was quite something, nonetheless). Most of our customers' IT groups reported through to the Finance Director. I had one law firm customer who still had IT reporting to the "Head of Library Services" because it was basically a glorified information archive. But of course, over the last 30 years, things have changed. Tech has changed, of course, but so have business structures. Very few CIOs report to a CFO now. And so I'm interested to see the way that Data teams are evolving. Most of them in my experience have reported through technology. But that is changing, and changing fast. Businesses increasingly are recognising that Data is a key business asset in the same way that Technology is. "Every company's a tech company now" used to be the mantra - now in many ways its data. And that is interesting from a hiring point of view. The way that companies prioritise, and arrange their teams, and who they bring in to address their challenges, and how they structure that - those things are exactly where we come in. Of course there's no right or wrong answer - but getting the right person and giving them the right remit can be critical to achieving business objectives. In 30 years I imagine it will seem as ridiculous that Data was ever part of Technology as it does that Technology was part of Finance. I mean, I'll be almost 80 so hopefully I'll be thinking about lawn bowls or something. But I'll try and keep an eye on it. I wrote a blog on this subject - link below 👇 Vocative #teams #business #structure

Tuesday Moanin' - Best and Worst Piece of Advice I Ever Got Years ago I worked in mainframe information systems (MIS.) That's what we used to call the IT department in the days when OJ Simpson was still just an ex-football player who made movies. Anyways - I was a computer operator (don't ask) and I wanted to be promoted to Data Analyst. I was trying to get noticed through my work product - which was stellar - but nothing was happening. A programmer I worked with - he ran a team that wrote COBOL programs on the back of stegosaurses (stegosauri?) - gave me this piece of advice: "Wherever you are going, when you're walking around the office, carry a piece of paper with you. To the lunch room, to the bathroom, all the time. It doesn't matter what's printed on it - it just needs to be white bond-paper with text on one side. One sheet - two at most is all you need." I asked why and he said "your boss and others will see you walking around with it and you will look really busy. You will look like you have a lot going on. They will think you have a lot of hustle. And busy people with a lot going on who hustle end up getting promoted." I thought that was the stupidest thing I ever heard. But he was leading a team of 10 programmers and was only five years older than me, so what the hell did I know? So I did it. I didn't change anything about the way I worked - I just carried a piece of paper with text on it all the time. I mean ALL. THE. TIME. When I got coffee, visited the loo, gabbed with co-workers, I carried it (now it wasn't the same sheet of paper - I'm not a total psycho.) Hilariously no one ever asked what I was holding. EVER. But 2 months later (almost to the DAY!) my boss (Master's in Computer Science) ask me to come to his office in an hour. 58 minutes later I pick up some paper & walked to his office. He said "People have been noticing your hustle and how busy you are - I think you are doing a great job. We have a data analyst position open - are you intersted?" I got the promotion. I kid you not. This is a true story and it's the best and worst advice I ever got. Best because I got the promotion that changed my career trajectory. And worst because COME ON - I got the job over other people because I had some white bond paper with me in the BATHROOM?????? That's insane and just patently unfair. From this I learned that many times there is little rhyme, reason, or logic to why many people get hired or promoted. A lot of it is subjective. And hidden from your eyes. If you're having challenges being hired or being promoted, it's not you - it's them. Please take that to heart. You will get a job. You will get promoted. And one day you will hire & promote people. Please don't make them carry some crappy piece of paper with them to the potty in order to get the job or the promotion. When you get the chance - and you WILL get the chance if you want it - be the hiring manager you've always wanted.
