China's Past and Future Vision - Professor Ken Hammond. Ken Hammond, PhD, professor of Asian History at New Mexico State University, talks about where China has been, and its vision for the future. Professor Hammond was a leader in Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) at Kent State in the '60's and '70's, is fluent in Mandarin, lived and studied in China for almost a decade, and has his PhD in History & East Asian Languages from Harvard University. His most recent book is "China’s Revolution and the Quest for a Socialist Future." This presentation was given at the Veterans For Peace National Convention on August 18, 2024.

How much latitude do countries have to hinge between the US and China, or are they somehow more beholden to one or the other and therefore must generally hinge more that way?

🗓 Date: May 29, 2024 🌍 Event: 29th Global Prominence Seminar: Understanding the Global South I had the opportunity to attend the 29th Global Prominence Seminar hosted by the Institute of International Affairs at Seoul National University. Here are some key takeaways from the seminar: -Global South: Dr. Ero questioned the usefulness of the term "Global South" and emphasized the differences among the countries within it. -Western Engagement: He critiqued how Western countries engage only with larger states in the Global South, assuming that others will follow. -Unique Interests: Each country has its own unique interests, making it impractical to identify a single leader for the Global South. This seminar reminded me of the complexities of international relations and the importance of understanding diverse perspectives. I am motivated to continue exploring these issues and contribute to the dialogue on global cooperation and development. Instead, Han emphasizes the need to examine everyday expressions of China’s presence in the region and consider the unintended impacts of a diverse network of actors shaping interactions between the two regions.
