🔥 How Firefighters Use Fire to Fight Fire: The Reverse Firing Technique Have you ever wondered how firefighters combat massive wildfires that seem unstoppable? One fascinating technique they use is reverse firing, also known as backfiring. Here’s how it works: 🌲 Step 1: When a wildfire becomes too large to control with traditional methods, firefighters set a controlled fire in a carefully chosen area ahead of the main fire. 🔥 Step 2: This controlled fire consumes all the available fuel (vegetation, debris, etc.) in the zone. 🛑 Step 3: Once extinguished, the area becomes a firebreak—a barrier that prevents the main wildfire from spreading further, as it has no fuel to burn. Why Reverse Firing is Effective: ✅ Prevents wildfire growth: By starving the fire of fuel. ✅ Protects communities and resources: Strategic buffers stop the fire in its tracks. ✅ Manages risks: Conducted under controlled conditions to ensure safety. Challenges in Reverse Firing: ⚠️ Requires precise planning and coordination: It's not a one-size-fits-all solution. ⚠️ Weather and terrain: Wind patterns and environmental factors are crucial. ⚠️ High stakes: Improper execution could lead to uncontrolled fires. This ingenious technique is widely used in wildfire-prone regions like California, where firefighters continuously innovate to protect life and property. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the bravery and ingenuity of these heroes who risk it all to keep us safe! 🙏💪 #FireSafety #Wildfires #FireFighting #Innovation #ClimateAction

An insightful article on how intense wildfires are now creating their own thunderstorms, raising the stakes for fire management. It underscores the importance of prescribed burning and highlights the growing challenges for firefighters, including the increasing reliance on aerial firefighting. BLAZETAMER380 is prepared and can be used on the ground for prescribed burns or dropped by air to help combat these fires. www.blazetamer.com #WildfireManagement #FireSuppression #AerialFirefighting #PrescribedBurning #BLAZETAMER380 #ADirectAttackSolution https://lnkd.in/ggrUEhqq

With the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, it's clear that investing in prevention systems is crucial. It seems that this Israeli firm is making remarkable strides in this field. Introducing FireDome, an innovative, AI-driven wildfire defense system inspired by Israel's Iron Dome technology. FireDome autonomously detects and suppresses wildfires by deploying fire retardant-filled capsules, creating protective barriers around properties and swiftly extinguishing spot fires. This eco-friendly solution offers continuous, off-grid monitoring, ensuring efficient wildfire detection, protection, and suppression without risking human lives. To everyone in the Los Angeles area, stay safe during these difficult times. Let's hope that innovations like this can help prevent such devastating catastrophes in the near future. https://lnkd.in/gRku845P

The 2024 #wildfireseason has been one of the most intense in decades across the Americas. Drought, heat, and extreme fire activity have pushed #wildlandfirefighters to their limits as they work to save lives, homes, and ecosystems. When visibility drops due to thick smoke, every second counts. HyperSight's vehicle-mounted #thermalimaging cameras empower firefighters to see through smoke, locate hotspots, and navigate safely – protecting crews, saving equipment, and increasing response effectiveness. ➡️ As wildfire seasons grow more extreme, advanced tools like HyperSight are mission-critical for frontline heroes.

🔥Update on SoCal Wildfire Defense Systems🔥 In our efforts to protect against wildfires, we frequently encounter power poles located on private properties. It is crucial for property owners or HOAs to ensure these trees near power lines are clear, as neglecting this responsibility can lead to fire outbreaks, especially during Santa Ana's dry, windy conditions. These scenarios often result in sparks igniting the vegetation, posing a significant risk. By utilizing the environmentally friendly Clore Fire Retardant, we effectively prevent ignition in both the surrounding vegetation and wooden structures. Together, we can mitigate the risks associated with wildfires. #WildfireDefense #FireSafety

Such exciting work in wildfire science in Canada. Great to see applied science happening in real time! KT! Agency engagement, mentorship, curiosity, emerging leaders. All this happens when there are more voices at the table. People, relationships, trust, respect, sharing. Boundary spanners are important, there has been great work defining the role of boundary spanners in the West too. So excited to see where this work can go. What is next for the integrated fire management pathway?
This August, the Ontario fire management program led a field-based study on airtanker drop effectiveness in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada and Canadian Forest Service. We want to know how Ontario should use its aerial suppression resources to effectively and efficiently fight wildfires – now and into the future. We monitored airtanker drops on an active spreading wildfire in the boreal forest using airborne remote sensing and a team of specialised fire behaviour observers. The data collection campaign is designed to directly measure the impact of water drops from the CL-415 airtanker on critical fire behaviour attributes that matter to fire management agencies when making tactical decisions in the field – how effectively the suppression knocks down flames, prevents fire growth, and holds the fireline. 🔥 🌲 https://lnkd.in/gbcK6Kfb Jason Robinson Gabriela Ifimov Mark de Jong Mike Wotton

The devastating Los Angeles fires of January 2025 have claimed at least 24 lives and destroyed over 10,000 structures at the time of this post, leaving countless families displaced and communities shattered. My heart goes out to all those affected. https://lnkd.in/gd4d4bmc Technology and Innovation as a Path Forward While we mourn these losses, we must also look to solutions that can prevent such catastrophic events in the future. Several promising technologies and approaches are emerging and I would love to learn about more: Autonomous Firefighting Drones Carnegie Mellon University is set to launch AI-powered firefighting drones in 2025 that can navigate through smoke and provide critical real-time terrain data. These drones could revolutionize our approach to wildfire detection and suppression. https://lnkd.in/gYieDsuZ Advanced Building Materials New fire-resistant materials and construction techniques are becoming available, including terra-cotta cladding, mineral wool insulation, and innovative fire-retardant plywood. The 2025 building codes are already incorporating stricter standards for fire resistance. https://lnkd.in/gF3QAUr8 https://lnkd.in/ghGRXtMQ Smart Urban Forest Management Companies like TreeSense and Grality are developing sophisticated monitoring systems that use AI and sensors to manage urban forests more effectively, potentially helping prevent fire spread in urban-wildland interfaces. https://lnkd.in/gW4qFMRT https://lnkd.in/gCrUQZDU Who else is building solutions in these areas? Who's funding them? I’d love to learn more and potentially collaborate. While the Los Angeles fires of January 2025 expose critical gaps in wildfire prevention infrastructure, they also present clear opportunities for technological innovation and policy reform in four key areas: smart firefighting systems, fire-resistant construction, infrastructure modernization, and urban forest management. However, these solutions require immediate action and investment to prevent future catastrophes in the wildland-urban interface. Let’s make this fire the last of its kind. To Los Angeles and all affected communities: may your rebuild be swift and may these innovations help create a more resilient future. Godspeed, LA. #LAFires #CommunityResilience #Innovation #ClimateAction #WildfirePrevention
