“Advice for the Intern” ep 11 📽 I had a great conversation with Gorilla 76 Senior Writer Mary Tomlinson about pursuing a passion, a career, and finding the balance between them — and I wanted to share her story and my biggest takeaways with y’all. Uncertain about which direction she wanted to take her career, Mary made the decision to step back from Gorilla and pursue freelance writing full time. While she said having a mentor to help her “course correct” would’ve been helpful, she also stressed the importance of trusting your gut. After a year of exploring that career path and learning more about her career goals and preferences, she decided that working at Gorilla again was the right fit for her. Mary is back at Gorilla now, and she’s here with the knowledge that she did explore that passion and confirmed that this was where she wanted to be. I love this story, and it reminds me of a famous Mark Twain saying: “If you must be regretful, regret what you didn’t do, not what you did.” That voice in the back of your head saying “what if” to a possibility never explored is a gnawing one. While taking that leap may seem daunting, I find that you learn more about yourself and where you want to go… …leading to a more resolute decision on which direction you choose to take. I’m looking to do free work for 3 new clients… for 3 months each. Why 3 new clients? While I have the digital marketing skills - Meta ads, LinkedIn ads, newsletters, etc. - I’m new to freelancing, and I’m new to the financial services industry. Now, the reason I’m looking to market for financial services firms is because I see so much opportunity for building a digital brand in a space where cold selling and in-person networking events are so prevalent. Making content and advertising on social media builds the same relationships and trust that an in-person event can on a much greater scale, and I want to help you do that. What’s the catch? If - and only if - you think it’s deserved, I only ask that you leave a killer review and a referral if you know anyone else who wants to market their services and fits the criteria. So what are the criteria: You’ve gotta be in the financial services. This includes financial advisors, financial planners, CPAs, wealth managers, you name it. Secondly, you’ve gotta have less than 50 employees - I’m a one-man show right now. As much as I’d love to work with some bigger companies, I can’t give you the volume of services necessary for your success and that’d be a failure on my end. Lastly, you’ve gotta be willing to allocate marketing spend. I can absolutely do newsletters or email marketing campaigns that require less spend than social media ads, but there’s still some overhead needed for tech and data collection. And yes! It will be a full 3 months of free work. Because I’m looking to build a long-term marketing program where clients come to you instead of the other way around, it takes time to build that momentum into a steady stream of new prospects and booked intro calls. I’m sure some of you financial advisors or financial planners have tried the cold outreach route. You’ve done the cold calls, you’ve sent the cold emails - and it sucked. And why wouldn’t it? You’re a complete stranger, selling your rather expensive services, in an unsolicited way, using personal contact information - of course they’re skeptical (and that’s putting it lightly). More than anything, cold outreach lacks any sense of familiarity. You want your prospects to know who you are, what you do, and how you do it - because that’s what they want. We’re living in a time when people can buy almost anything they want at the click of a button. Of course they reject a seller who takes away that buying power from them. Instead, become the person they know through the content you make. That way, they feel the agency to CHOOSE whether to watch your content, and CHOOSE to reach out to you when they’re ready to. You can do this through organic content like a video, a blog article, or a newsletter. You can even run ads with the sole purpose of taking them to that content to consume more. Meet your buyers where they are, and they will eventually cross that line from lead to new client all on their own. #finance #financialmarketing

In the meantime, here’s how to get some quick wins under your belt: 👉 Retarget current website traffic Here’s how: 1️⃣ Install a Facebook Pixel or LI Insight tag on your website This helps track your website traffic and allows you to create an audience that shows ads to those same people. 2️⃣ Create high-intent social media ads This includes great reviews, testimonials or case studies that handle objections & differentiate your company from the competition. 3️⃣ Make your target audience website visitors from the past 180 days This works for LinkedIn & Meta ads, and this warm audience will be easier to convert into a customer. If you have a decent company social media following, you can also retarget page visitors with these high-intent ads. Whew, where to start?... My year-long internship with Gorilla 76 ended a couple of weeks ago, and with graduation wrapping up last week, I’ve been able to reflect a bit more on this past year. And here’s what I’ve been thinking about: 1️⃣ G76 has set a HIGH bar. With rockstar teammates, a company culture with core values that are practiced and celebrated every day, an HR department that actually cares, and so much more, this first marketing experience of mine has set the standard for the rest of my career. 2️⃣ I’ve learned so much this past year It was hard to reflect on my improvement when I was in the thick of it, but it’s been a lot easier to look back on it all these past two weeks. From barely knowing anything about marketing to getting comfortable within a media buying role, I’m extremely grateful for the trust and teaching of SO many of the Gorillas who helped me get there. Nobody is less than an expert, and they’re all smart cookies. But most importantly, they were patient and kind enough to spend the time needed to get me where I am now. The moral of the story: find amazing teammates and teachers. 3️⃣ The people make the company Answering “the people” to your favorite part about the job sounds cliche, but there’s a reason it’s such a common answer. From whatever aspect, whether it’s talent, kindness, collaboration, etc, it really is the people who make Gorilla an amazing company and made this past internship such a wonderful experience. - P.S. On a final note, I’ll be setting up a Calendly around mid-June, and I would love to meet and connect with any marketers who’d be willing to share their experiences and roles. That way, I can continue to learn and meet some cool people:) So, keep an eye out for another post around then!
