It visually represents the range of illumination levels (brightness) and correlated color temperatures that people generally find comfortable. Dutch physicist Arie Andries Kruithof developed the curve based on psychophysical experiments. While we often focus on hierarchy, we forget that contrast is the foundation of hierarchy and depth of perception. So, what is contrast? It's the noticeable difference in brightness created by light falling on surfaces or objects in a space. Contrast is the key to evoking emotions and creating an immersive experience. It has the power to transport us to another world, calm our minds, and regulate our emotions. Think about it - after a long day of touring a city, you enter a historical church or museum, and suddenly, you feel a sense of pause and tranquility. That's the magic of contrast! We often see contrast used effectively in churches, museums, restaurants and stage shows, but I believe Aesop stores have mastered this magical spell. As a lighting designer, once you understand the hierarchy and contrast you want to achieve, the lighting levels fall into place.
