Enjoy a short retirement

A true leader in our field.

I count March 30th, 1982, as one of the most important dates in my professional life. That is when my Stewart journey started in Houston, Texas. In addition to great professional development opportunities, Stewart is a place where lifelong friendships are made. Friendships that transcend professional collaboration. I can count tons of friends across all states and the globe. That includes India, Pakistan, Greece, Mexico, UK, Canada, South Africa, The Philippines, Korea, Costa Rica, West Indies. Just to name a few. On a personal level, I would like to recognize Mr. Stewart Morris, Jr., ex-Senior Chair Stewart Title Guaranty for his support and guidance. He has been much more than a boss. He has been a mentor and a friend. An extremely well-respected business leader not only in Texas but across the US. A family man. The Morris’s do so much for so many educational institutions and charitable causes across Texas and the US. The other person is late Miss Peggy Hedge from Caruthersville, Missouri. She was Controller - Stewart Title Houston. She is the single most important person to teach me the ins and outs of a real estate title closing. Especially escrow accounting. Her oft repeated sentence was “Amin, you know I am from the Show Me state”. That alone would keep us on our toes making sure software releases are as perfect as possible. Whatever success I had at Stewart belongs to the team who made it happen. I just happened to be part of the team. And of course, my better half. I will be remiss if I don’t talk about a bit about Stewart – the institution. You don’t make a 131-years old globally successful institution without great leadership and many challenges along the way. Eight years before Stewart was founded in Galveston, Texas in 1893 a devastating fire raged through the city. Galveston had to be re-built block by block. Then 7 years after its founding a hurricane literally flattened the city. It is simply called “1900 Hurricane”. Along the way there has been The Great Depression, World War, oil, and real estate booms and busts, mortgage crisis. All these has tested Stewart. Through all these Stewart has come out stronger. Executing strategy, successfully meeting challenges and moving ahead is in Stewart’s DNA. I can say with full confidence. A brighter future lies ahead. Stewart is on its way to being a “Premier Title Services Company”. My very best wishes to all. Go Stewart!

EDGES OF THE RETIREMENT 5 “The unhappiest people of the world are those in the international watering places like the South Coast of France, and Newport, and Palm Springs, and Palm Beach." --Nixon I may not agree with Nixon, but I get his point. I've talked a lot about the kernel of belief. That to work for an organization, to serve any sort of greater purpose -- you must hold fast to a core, kernel belief in what you're doing is right. And where you're doing it is the right place for you to be. You don't stay with an organization, habit, or practice -- for decades on end, unless you believe it's the right thing to do. Unless you believe the majority of what you do, ends up towards an achievement you want to be remembered by. We chase and crave alignment -- belief runs close with alignment. If any part of that kernel of belief cracks or fractures, you have to move. You have to get out. There's another kernel than runs with belief: the kernel of discontent. People, by design, are contextually discontent. We moderate ourselves against the numerator of what we want, over the denominator of what we have. Friends, family, fortunes, futures -- all stem and stemmed by our discontent. I'm still working with this one. Discontent drives action -- but not always driving change or improvement. I know, there's a positive way to spin this as well. Content as being the towards goal, vice discontent being the away goal -- being the thing we run away from. I get Nixon's point -- people in the best, most picturesque of places can become beset by their discontents. But I also think -- Nixon doesn't account for what it takes for those people to get where they are. Moreover, Nixon was always haunted by his own perception of discontent and inadequacy. It caused his own ultimate downfall. Retirement is a new construct. To be "retired" doesn't mean to be done. Far from it -- it means to find a new focus on belief. And a new way to frame our discontents. #military #transition #uscg #coastguard #experience

There has been a significant change in the ability, demeanour & attitude of people in their 60, 70 & in Mick's case 80's :). In many ways, there are no substitutes for the combination of meaningful experience & focused enthusiasm/energy. Todays' leaders need to take note of this systemic and unavoidable market demographic change and re-profile their organisations to look for 'value-add opportunities' to introduce experienced & energetic ex-colleagues/professionals. Just think back to the people that; helped you with your career; helped you solve your business challenges, helped you grow/flourish, trusted you to get 'the break' that accelerated your opportunity....and helped you become the success that you are today. This new opportunity can manifest itself in several ways and guises including key strategic interim or transitional roles that can help you execute faster and more accurately. The world is in transition, the world is changing, thinking outside the box and being a first mover is what winners do...time for a re-think?
