Did you catch the WKYC news segment featuring a community health worker (CHW), Fonda McLaine, and her client, Nadine Head, discussing "Addressing Cardiometabolic Health Inequities by Early Prevention in the Great Lakes Region" (ACHIEVE GreatER)? This research project, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is a multi-stakeholder partnership among Better Health Partnership, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, Wayne State University and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), operating in both Cleveland and Detroit. The goal of ACHIEVE GreatER is to reduce cardiovascular complications and hospitalizations for Black patients living in public housing, and who are at risk of heart disease, by improving blood pressure, lipid, and glucose targets. The project, which seeks to determine the impact grassroots efforts can have to address cardiovascular health disparities, pays for community health workers, nurses and care coordinators to work with clients living in CMHA units and coordinate their care with clinical providers and other community resources. Better Health Partnership (BHP) is partnering with University Hospitals to offer a sustainable model for funding CHWs beyond the 5-year grant cycle via the Better Health Pathways HUB. It is imperative to recognize the significant repercussions that may arise from lacking a guiding dream for one's future journey. Dreams serve as the driving force behind our actions, shaping our aspirations and influencing our perspectives. Consider the boundless possibilities that optimistic dreams offer, allowing individuals to not only envision but also actively pursue their goals. By embracing these aspirations, one can navigate through challenges, seize opportunities, and ultimately carve out a meaningful and impactful existence in the world. Reflecting back on a pivotal moment in my past, a question posed by my Elementary School Teacher Yenealem Atinafu Liyew sparked a profound realization within me. When asked about my future ambitions, I confidently expressed my desire to become a teacher. At that time, my understanding of the role of a teacher was limited to imparting course-based knowledge. However, as I ventured into higher education and delved into courses such as Environmental Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, my perspective underwent a transformative shift. Two fundamental inquiries emerged in my mind: the innovations surrounding Solar Energy conversion and the pressing need to combat Environmental Depletion caused by chemical contaminants. The prevalence of waste chemicals in various forms - solid, liquid, and gaseous - poses a looming threat to our environment. It is disheartening to witness how irresponsibly disposed pharmaceutical products, pesticides, industrial chemicals, surfactants, and personal care items pervade our surroundings, jeopardizing the delicate balance of nature. The alarming reality is that the disposal of Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (CECs) into our ecosystems, particularly aquatic systems, can have far-reaching consequences on living organisms. It raises critical questions about the awareness and accountability of pharmaceutical factory owners, pharmacists, medical professionals, and the communities regarding the adverse impacts of such substances on our environment and its inhabitants including human being. Just more than happy to be one of the First Awardees of the most prestigious Postdoctoral fellowship program, DOROTHY-MSCA COFUND program. This was my dream, to just engage in mind-blowing and internationally recognized research programs and realize my dreams come true, to tackle Public Health crises due to CECs! Such questions include: (1) the specific activities PRSS engage in and in which settings they conduct them, (2) how benefit from services is best operationalized and measured, and (3) the economic valuation of these services.

Join the School of Public Health for our April Dean's Grand Rounds on April 26 with guest speaker, Dr. Thomas LaVeist, Dean and Weatherhead Presidential Chair in Health Equity at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. LaVeist is also the chair of Board of Directors for the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). Dr. LaVeist's research and writing has focused on three broad thematic research questions: 1) What are the social and behavioral factors that predict the timing of various related health outcomes (e.g. access and utilization of health services, mortality, entrance into nursing home?); 2) What are the social and behavioral factors that explain race differences in health outcomes?; and 3) What has been the impact of social policy on the health and quality of life of African Americans? His work includes both qualitative and quantitative analysis. LaVeist seeks to develop an orienting framework in the development of policy and interventions to address race disparities in health-related outcomes. Specific areas of expertise include: U.S. health and social policy, the role of race in health research, social factors contributing to mortality, longevity and life expectancy, quantitative and demographic analysis and access, and utilization of health services.
