What you need to know as a summer intern in finance, may it be banking or venture capital: 1. Observe and mimic how others review work. Even tenured VPs at investment banks review slides word for word. My old boss used to take a hard copy of an RFP or slide deck, hold a pencil or ruler, and go line by line. There are techniques to reviewing excel models too. 2. Ask what a good output looks like. If you’re given a research project, seek exemplars first. Colleagues might not have the perfect comp, but writing well on the job is different to writing an A+ college essay. Surprise them by coming up with something actually useful. 3. Organize your 1:1 meetings. Clearly differentiate FYI updates from SOS issues. When struggling, demonstrate competence by noting attempted solutions before escalating. 4. Proactively report progress: Don't wait until the internship is over; self-assess against KPIs mid-internship. Collaborate (vs compete) with fellow interns who seem to know what they are doing to improve chances of a return offer and complement your weaknesses. Ask, how do you do dat? 😉 5. Be the team mate that you would want to partner with. Go beyond relationship-building. Lead with kindness, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility to get things done.

This summer, Sanya is working for CC Industries as a Growth Equity & Sustainability Intern! Let's learn more about her role: What drew you to this company? "I always knew I wanted to work for a smaller firm doing a different role this summer than I would be next summer, and when a DSP alum reached out I knew it was the exact place I wanted to work! CC Industries is a family office and I could tell through some calls and my first couple interviews that the culture was so unique." What has been the most rewarding part of your experience? "The most rewarding part of my journey has been getting to build fundamental finance and investing skills working with sustainable companies. I have learned an immense amount about the environmental state of the world, and talk to inventors and CEOS who have created some incredible technologies and solutions that can address that. As an intern, I have even had the opportunity to source potential clients for the firm! Throughout the summer I have been working on identifying emerging industries in sustainability investing and finding companies that fit the mission of my team, and am starting the introduction process. The work is something I have never thought I would be able to do, and learning from these entrepreneurs about sustainability and finance has been the most rewarding opportunity." How did DSP aid in your internship journey? Is there a brother you are specifically grateful for because of their help? "Being a part of the DSP network helped me land the internship! A 2016 alum, Courtney Hoyt, who works on another investing group at the company reached out and informed us about internship opportunities and was super helpful to me during the recruiting process." During my internship, I undertook a comprehensive assignment focused on equity analysis. This involved selecting 30 sectors based on 8 key parameters, ranking the top 10 sectors, and subsequently evaluating 10 companies from each sector by market capitalization. Using a detailed set of 12 parameters such as PE Ratio, ROE, Profit Growth etc, I identified the top 3 companies from each sector. Finally, I employed a weighted average method to strategically distribute invested funds. I am pleased to present the fund factsheet below.
