Hydropower is the world's largest source of renewable energy and plays an important role in transitioning electric grids to clean energy. Did you know that hydropower can support the integration of wind and solar generation in several ways? Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a mature grid-scale storage technology and the most reliable for long-duration energy storage. During low-demand periods, excess solar and wind electricity can be used to pump water from a lower to an upper reservoir, providing up to eight hours of backup energy. This technology supports grid reliability and resilience, especially during extreme weather when backup energy is crucial. Dams, rivers, and even ocean tides are used to create this energy, providing clean and sustainable power with minimal environmental impact. It's one of the oldest and most widely used forms of renewable energy globally.The amount of current produced by hydroelectricity varies widely depending on the size and capacity of the hydroelectric power plant. Small-scale installations might generate a few megawatts, while large-scale facilities can produce hundreds or even thousands of megawatts of electricity. Is hydroelectricity usefull nowadays? Absolutely! Hydroelectricity remains a crucial and valuable source of renewable energy today. It's reliable, cost-effective, and produces electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, contributing significantly to global electricity generation. The International Energy Agency (IEA) released their report, "The Breakthrough Agenda Report 2023" ⚡ 🌎 A key section in the report describes the importance of retrofitting and repurposing hydropower projects which can provide a significant boost in clean energy generation: "Though probably the most mature renewable technology, existing hydropower has typically been in operation for 30-50 years, which means its ageing fleet requires modernisation to meet ever-evolving power system needs... To really see the potential of pumped storage principles, it's time to think beyond the dam. You don't need some massive chunk of concrete as is so typically pictured in these kinds of discussions. You just need reservoirs at different elevations and appropriately sized conduits connecting them. There is also nothing that prevents those reservoirs and conduits from being applied to a myriad of other uses like fire protection, drainage, water distribution, transportation, or as part of district heating systems to name a few...

"I can stabilize the grid, cut carbon emissions, and save you money." — Energy Flexibility The IEA states that due to fluctuating renewable energy sources net-zero electricity systems require four times the flexibility of conventional systems. German TSOs project that control reserve demand will more than double by 2030. With the decommissioning of many conventional flexibility sources, particularly thermal power plants, new sources of energy flexibility are essential. Solutions like #Batteries, #PowerToHeat, #Electrolysis, #EVcharging, flexible biogas/hydrogen CHPs, flexible industrial processes, and even PV and wind power will play a critical role. #EnergyFlexibility #DemandResponse #Sustainability #NetZero #Electrification
