AI strikes again: Imagine you have a large office with many rooms. Each room has people working on different tasks, and they need to share information quickly and efficiently. To make this happen, you have two types of helpers: Layer 2 helpers and Layer 3 helpers. Layer 2 helpers work within a single room. They know exactly where everyone is sitting and can quickly deliver messages from one person to another within that room. They recognize people by their faces, which is like how Layer 2 switches use MAC addresses. This system works great when everyone you need to communicate with is in the same room. Layer 3 helpers, on the other hand, can deliver messages not only within one room but also between different rooms. They don't just recognize faces; they also know room numbers, which is like how Layer 3 switches use IP addresses. This means they can take a message from one room and deliver it to another room, even if it's far away. This is essential when the office has many rooms, and people need to communicate across the entire building. So, in simple terms: Layer 2 helpers are excellent for quick and efficient communication within a single room, while Layer 3 helpers are necessary for connecting different rooms and ensuring the entire office can share information seamlessly.

As we wrap up 2023, our BI team has been digging deeper into the nuances of what our data says about human behaviour. This is a measure of design intent vs. actual outcomes - a tool for #architects as well as #fm to understand human behaviour and iteratively drive desired outcomes. Occupancy sensors are so much more valuable than for understanding occupancy alone. Peak and percentile utilisation and occupancy are essential in making real estate portfolio decisions but when redesigning offices you need to understand how people are working to ensure you provide the right furniture, spaces and environments and enable your people to have a successful day in the office.
