In socialism, the designer was merely another worker in the industry, part of the collective. Despite being a crucial link in production, they didn't emphasize authorship with their full name, as is the case today. Nevertheless, many pioneers of industrial design in the Yugoslavia distinguished themselves through their work and managed to build their own name, or at least contemporary times brought such a perspective to their work and creativity. What can be terminologically framed as Yugoslav design today is marked by talented designers whose works have left an indelible mark. I pay special attention to them in a new text, just one in a series on this topic. #industrialdesign #Yugoslavia https://lnkd.in/dJ-GEtVN

Today I had the chance to attend the event « Italian Design Between Function and Poetry » at the Algerian Italian embassy.🇮🇹 The opportunity to participate in discussions and presentations exploring the intricate relationship between function and poetry in Italian design is both inspiring and invaluable 🤩 As I reflect on the significance of design, I am reminded of a quote that resonates deeply with me: "Design is not just about what it looks like and how it works. It’s about how it feels…and a good design is where art and science break even." These words encapsulate the essence of design as a harmonious blend of aesthetic beauty and practical functionality, a philosophy that I am eager to explore further. Rightfully, when we delve into today’s topic, I immediately thought of the enduring principles of architecture articulated by Vitruvius: "firmitas, utilitas, venustas," which emphasize the importance of structural integrity, functionality, and aesthetic delight. From the firmness of architectural form to the practical utility of everyday objects, and the delightful aesthetic experiences they evoke, Italian design exemplifies the harmonious balance of functionality and beauty. But what is beauty and what is function ? Everything has its own function nowadays and we have endless possibilities to explore further our creativity… so, are we ready to dream big ? What about you, how do you see design ?

"If design is about order, its precondition is not void, but chaos (...) imposing a meaningful order begins with drawing the line that separates what is subject to the design effort from what is not." "Design is a magic circle that produces an orderly inside and a chaotic outside. Designers safeguard and rework the circle's shifting border, and place ideas, things and people either within it or without it. But the line is porous: our attempts at ordering are inevitably artificial and their outcome necessarily unstable: entropy corrodes the negentropic islands that we call our projects. Order is always under siege." These musings from Silvio Lorusso's book "What Design Can't Do" live rent free in my head. - #design #theory #order #art
