Last week, I wrapped up a year-long journey on a zero-to-one product for the Ministry of Justice. Watching the project evolve from concept to reality, especially as we introduced it to real users, was exhilarating. Yet, what truly made the experience remarkable was the incredible team behind it. As we held fortnightly retros, we unearthed numerous insights about our processes and performance. My contributions often focused on process tweaks—what can I say, I'm a process person. However, reflecting on the past year, my biggest takeaway is that the people behind the project are the key to success. Here are some helpful tips to prioritising people 1️⃣ Be Flexible: In today's world, rigid office hours are a thing of the past. Embracing flexibility in location and working hours can unlock your team's potential. Identify core collaborative moments, but otherwise, encourage your team to find what works best for them. A small shift in someone's schedule might significantly boost their performance. 2️⃣ Socialise: With remote work, casual office chit-chat has dwindled. However, building personal connections is crucial. Make socialising part of your routine. Allocate time during meetings to catch up on personal lives and interests. Building trust and breaking down barriers will enhance team cohesion and performance. 3️⃣ Encourage Team Knowledge: Promote a culture where it's okay not to know everything. Instead of overwhelming everyone with information, view the team as a collective knowledge pool. Foster collaboration in small groups and ensure everyone feels comfortable asking questions.
