In case you missed it, yesterday (4th of June) was the inaugural World Day for Assistive Technology, which is all about unlocking opportunities that are not possible without AT.
But the outcomes we can achieve with AT are dependent on the quality of the prescription process. All steps are essential, but I wanted to highlight an important one in this post.
With NDIS AT applications often taking 6 months to be processed at the moment, it can be easy to forget that the process doesn’t end when you submit the application.
You need to do appropriate follow-up once the AT is provided, otherwise…
The person is at risk of abandoning AT, when all that’s needed is some individualised adjustments or education on how to use it.
You also won’t know whether you’ve actually solved the functional difficulty the person was having or not, until you give the new AT a test run.
And you won’t know if you’ve done a good job, or learn what you might need to do differently next time, unless you can see those outcomes yourself.
So next time you submit an NDIS AT application, put a reminder in your calendar for a month’s time to check on the progress of the application. And let’s face it, realistically, set it to repeat monthly for the next six months, and hopefully by then you’ll know the outcome and can do the follow-up.
If you’d like to find out more about other good practice principles you should be applying when prescribing AT, check out the document shared by ARATAaustralia below – it’s worth a read!
