Alexa, play "Love Is The Message" 🎶 . . . I'm a child of the 80s, but I LOVE a 70s aesthetic. I remember thumbing through family photo albums and loving everything about the vibe...the colors, the cars, the fashion. And Afros. So many Afros. Not to mention that the house I grew up in...my grandmother's house...remained locked in 70s decor well into the 90s 😂 But I realized something else...to me, the 70s symbolized, for the first time in history, and after decades and decades of fighting, complete Black freedom. And although we have a long way to go, we've come pretty far too. And the 1970s showcased that in the most colorful way. This illustration was inspired by that aesthetic and that realization. And of course, an Afro was necessary ☮ "Groovy" digital illustration, in Adobe Fresco. This license board is a vibrant fusion of pop culture and street art aesthetics. It features Disney characters like Mickey and Minnie, blended with anime-style elements and urban imagery. The color scheme is dominated by purples and pinks, creating a dreamy, psychedelic vibe. Text in both English and Japanese adds layers of meaning, while phrases like "Good Vibes Only" and "Create Something Cool Today" reinforce a playful, rebellious tone. The mix of cartoon characters, typography, and photographic elements creates a dynamic collage effect. ✨ As an artist, I’m always looking for new ways to express creativity, and recently, I explored pen tattoo design as a medium to push my boundaries. This piece, featuring a skull with horns and a subtle cross, is inspired by gothic and symbolic themes. The design reflects a fusion of raw power, mysticism, and a dark aesthetic, all while playing with intricate linework and minimalism. 💛 Creating this tattoo allowed me to delve deeper into storytelling through art—each element, from the horns symbolizing strength and defiance to the cross representing a juxtaposition of belief and rebellion, tells its own narrative. Even though it’s just a temporary medium, designing tattoos offers an opportunity to experiment with bold visual languages that leave a lasting impression. This exercise taught me that art, no matter the platform or tool, is limitless. 💎 Whether I’m working with digital tools like Photoshop and Illustrator or simply a pen and my imagination, I’m always exploring new ways to channel creativity into powerful visual forms. As a visual artist, color is my world. If there is a color I’m not fond of (it has that ick factor about it), I can come to love it when teamed up with other colors that all play nice together, a.k.a. a color palette. The influence of color is bubbling up as I work on some branding tweaks for Terra Kind Studio Co. As a business, I offer a product — original art and limited edition print collections. As a human and an artist, I offer connection, curiosity, edutainment, and stories around the natural world. Color plays a role in how I communicate this. Food for thought: 90% of what we buy is based solely on color. Yeah, 90%. This is a finding that comes from Ravikanti Gopikrishna and Montosh Kumar pulled from their 2015 publication on a conceptual study on the psychology of color in marketing and branding in the International Journal of Economic Research. The Yellow Duck Syndrome 🎨 Throughout my career, I've coined the term 'The Yellow Duck Syndrome' to illustrate how the perception of something can drastically change based on presentation. For instance, when showcasing a painting of a yellow duck with strokes out of place and no context, it's likely that a potential buyer will dismiss it, assuming it's the work of an amateur. However, when first presenting masterpieces by a renowned artist and then revealing the same painting with the same misplaced strokes but signed by that recognized artist, the buyer tends to reinterpret these imperfections, even considering the purchase at a reasonable price. From a business standpoint, reluctance to invest in an artwork without knowledge of the creator is understandable. However, as consumers seeking to enhance our homes, we often reject what is different due to biases about the creator's skill. In summary, if you're a creative professional aiming to deliver innovative designs, ensure they are accompanied by a compelling narrative that justifies and explains the creativity. Finding My Creative Compass Here's where my journey took root. The artist's path is often paved with the pressure to have a "style"—a signature that's distinctly yours. To be honest, that expectation was daunting, a bit like a creative straightjacket. So, I leaned on what I knew—graphic design. Instead of confining myself to a single style, I imagined a logo, a character that could be my creative alter ego. This character became my template, offering consistency without chaining down my curiosity. It let me dance across styles, mediums, and narratives, even into the realm of large-scale sculptures.
