What is Self-Care? The World Health Organization defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” Self-care is any activity that we do intentionally in order to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept, it’s something we can very often overlook. Good self-care is key to an improved mood and reduced anxiety. A self-care activity can be as simple as taking the time to enjoy a cup of tea, listening to your favorite music or going out for a walk. Think about some simple activities that re-energize you. Identify and implement any particular forms of self-care that work for you. Self-care needs to be something you actively plan, rather than something that just happens. Self-care is key to preventing burnout!

Over the last number of years, I have become aware that my health was struggling. I experienced muscular pain, fatigue, difficulty sleeping and bouts of feeling blue. In addition to nursing, I am a long-time meditator and energy health practitioner. Despite all my resources, I came up empty in making a dent in helping myself feel better. Two years ago, these symptoms were escalating. I felt anti-social and without any energy to participate in activities outside of work. I knew something had to change, but I felt hopeless to understand what or how. I know that I am not alone, and I think it is important that we share our stories. I am excited to be hosting a powerful conversation for care professionals called Running in Circles: The # 1 Reason Why Health Care Professionals Struggle with Self-Care. Wednesday, May 22nd, from 6:30 -8:30pm at Roots and Wings in Natick, MA This workshop is devoted to your relationship with self-care. We'll honestly look at your current relationship with self-care—where you are, what you want, and what's keeping you stuck. Twenty years ago when I graduated physician burnout wasn’t visible. In 2021 burnout is one of the greatest challenges facing our profession. As doctors we dedicate our lives to the wellbeing of others, but too often this means that with good intention we sacrifice our own wellbeing and that’s not noble, it’s reckless. We need to prioritise looking after ourselves and the quality of our lives, both individually and systemically; sick doctors don’t make good doctors. When we take better care of our wellbeing, when the system takes better care of our wellbeing, we’re more able to take care of our patients and out communities’ wellbeing. While we await system change the medical community must come together to shift the paradigm of self-sacrifice.
