Thinking about my former colleagues impacted by recent layoffs. Some unsolicited words of encouragement from someone who's "been there, done that"... -Take a beat: Give yourself the time and space to digest. Losing a job unexpectedly sets off a grief process. Give yourself permission to grieve. -Check on your impacted peers: One of the best ways we can help ourselves is when we help others. Supporting your fellow impacted colleagues is supporting yourself. -Remember you are not your job: I get this one, I really do and I've talked about how my own identity becomes naturally linked to what I do for work. But having a healthy separation between who you are and what you do is a win win for you and your future employer. -Get closer to your supporters: Anyone who reaches out to you during this time is a friend. Remember who they are, and make an effort to keep them close. -Invest in self care: You just lost your ability to support yourself and maybe your family, so your instinct might be to conserve all costs. That's right, but don't neglect what it takes to care for yourself—it's the most important investment you'll make. I suppose all of the above goes for anyone being impacted—especially during the holidays, probably one of the worst time of the year to lose a job. Hang in there, and take it one day and step at a time.

Do these 3 things for your friends impacted by layoffs, without them having to ask: → Write a Recommendation on their LinkedIn profile. → Tag them in conversations about opportunities on LinkedIn. → Refer them to previous employers or connections hiring in your network. There are so many ways we can offer help. Please ask your friend their personal preference on how to best support them. - Sometimes sending job after job their way might be overwhelming. - Small talk and checking-in may be emotionally and mentally draining some days. - Posting publicly about them, without their consent, may be sharing personal news that they weren’t ready to share yet. (I'm not saying these are bad things, at all, but please check on your friend's individual needs.) Show your continuous love and support, whatever that might look like. To any recently impacted by a layoff, my heart breaks for you. I understand what going through a layoff is like, and it can be life-shattering. But you are worth so much more than how you might feel in this moment 💛

A simple act like referring someone every time you receive a message from a recruiter or tagging them in job opening posts can make a significant difference. No one is coming to save you… That’s a phrase you commonly hear thrown around when it comes to layoffs. And in large part, it’s true. No one is dropping a new role in your lap. I’ve spoken with numerous people over the last few months in layoff seasons here’s what they said: “I was blown away, I thought I had a good network but it was crickets 🦗🦗” “The people who stepped up to help me were not the ones I would have expected” 😳 “Colleagues I thought were good friends ghosted me 👻 within a few days/weeks” Do any of these resonate with you? I don’t think the phrase “No one is coming to save you” is meant to be taken harshly. It’s a matter of truth. Those outside of your closest inner circle don’t care at the same level as you. Which is to be expected. Instead, I think the phrase is meant to light a fire 🔥under our butts and calls us to action. To be vigilant in our pursuit of what’s next and to make a game plan to accomplish it. Applied to 500 jobs on LinkedIn with no results… try something new. Drop someone a voice note or a loom video telling them why you’d be a perfect fit for that role. Your network stopped checking in on you after several weeks or months into your layoff? (THIS IS NORMAL) Counter the silence! Post a few times a week telling your community about what you’re learning. Use video if it makes sense. Did you know there are almost 1B users on LinkedIn now and less than 1% create any type of content? I could go on but the point is this: Be persistent. Have a plan. Execute it. Create community along your journey. As the saying goes: “No one is coming save you” So get after it and let me know how I can help. ❤️✌🏼

Had a discussion with a couple of friends recently about layoffs + how hard it is to get a new opportunity, and I'd like to share my personal thought about it. Layoffs are never easy, and I've unfortunately experienced my share over the years. It's tough in the moment, but looking back, one unexpected benefit has been a significant expansion of my professional and personal network. I'm not the only one who's noticed this. Many of my friends who've been through layoffs have had similar experiences. For example, I once had a great conversation with a customer. Why? We instantly connected after discovering we had mutual acquaintances. Almost every opportunity I've landed has come from referrals. And when I'm hiring, referrals are always at the top of my list. So, what's the key takeaway from these tough times? First and foremost, prioritize our health and build a financial safety net. Secondly, nurture our network, always. Stay in touch with the right people and maintain those relationships. Finally, stay positive – things always have a way of working out in the long run. Take care.

I've seen so many incredible people I have crossed paths with being impacted by layoffs over the last 2+ years. A lot of folks reach out looking for advice (and please keep reaching out! I empathize, I've been there, however I can help I am here!) In general, the three big things I tell most people is this: 1. Take some time to make a list of all the people you’ve worked with, collaborated with, had coffee meetings with, or who have made an impact on you. Even if it’s someone you haven’t talked to in years—reach out and reconnect. You never know where those connections might lead!   2. Use LinkedIn to connect with and message people at the companies you’re applying to. Sure, some people may just see your message as noise and ignore it, but it only takes one person to respond to make all the difference.   3. Stay organized. Keep a list of where you’ve applied and who you’ve reached out to. And don’t forget to follow up with people! I know it’s not easy out there. Every connection you make and every message you send brings you one step closer to your next opportunity.

This is one of the hardest, most vulnerable messages I’ve ever written. I’m hoping this will help someone who is facing similar challenges. I know thousands of people out there who have been affected by company layoffs. I've been laid off twice in 2 years, not due to performance, but to company reduction/restructuring. I initially was consulting for my BIL but decided to pursue something full-time with benefits. Our family home which we built over the past 7 years is on the market. As much as it kills us to sell, there aren't many options. We are still hoping and praying something will happen that will allow us to stay here. Since February, I’ve applied for hundreds of positions, and have received 2 replies. I’ve been ghosted on multiple interviews, personal LI messages, etc. It's hard not to take this personality, but I’m confident in myself and my ability to keep moving forward. I’ve read dozens of messages from others who are experiencing the same thing. While it's somewhat relieving to hear those stories, it's sad that this is the world we live in today. Going through multiple layoffs caused my wife and I to hit rock bottom. Once you get to the bottom, there is only one way up. True grit and determination. We started going to church and asking for directions. I won't go off on a spiritual rant here, but our life seems much more meaningful and worth fighting for. We see a light that we’ve never seen before.  I’ve also gone back to my roots of physical labor. I’m not too proud to admit that. It's quite exhilarating. I’ve started a Pressure Washing Business (duo pressure washing on IG if you want to follow). What does DUO stand for? Do Unto Others!!! It's the one rule I have always lived by!! Right now I’m doing driveways, sidewalks, and stone work around my neighborhood in hopes that it grows into something much bigger. We’ve always dreamed of creating something we can hand down to our kids, and this may just be it. Only time will tell. I’m already booked up through next week so things are looking positive. For those who know me, it's more tools to add to the collection. 🙂 I’m continuing to look for future opportunities, but this keeps my mental health in a good place. If anyone knows of a great company that could use someone with my work history and talent, please let me know. I would love to stay in SaaS as the majority of my work history is in this field. While I love leading people, and helping them grow, I’m not against an IC role. Job stability is most important this time around.  Also, if anyone else is struggling and could use someone to talk to, I’m an open door. Sometimes just having an ear can make all the difference. Companies will still lay you off even if it’s 2 weeks before Christmas. Even if you have mouths to feed. Even if you’ve been loyal for years. Even if you have a mortgage to pay. Whether the company is big or small. Whether you’re a good or bad performer. Whether the company has done layoffs before. Whether you were impacted by the layoffs recently, or at any point earlier in this endless nightmare of mass layoffs Here’s what I had to learn to be able to build not just job security, but self security: 1). Build your network before you need to job search ↳ I spent 2 years building mine before I asked for any help 2). Take the time you need to just process your emotions ↳ I took a weekend and looking back I should’ve taken more 3). Hot take here: publicly announce you’re back on the market ↳ I got almost all my referrals and interviews from this post I made Last but not least, know that you have so many in your corner rooting for you through every step of this process. ♻️ Reshare this for someone who needs to hear it!

Hi Jason, I have seen many of such posts and replying to yours as this is the one that truly resonated with me.😇 I also believe in relying on faith( any that our soul resonates with) in tough times and looking at creating opportunities.(talking of faith is a whole separate topic and might write about it separately). I did both of these since last year myself after numerous unsuccessful applications and still have them. I chose to use my skills, up-skilled them and created a digital marketing entrepreneurship to work with businesses on their Content and social media. Yes my vision is to work with businesses to empower women financially as that education is what has kept me going in this challenging time. With so many facing layoffs just before the holiday season, I wanted to share a bit of positivity and encouragement for everyone. I had the pleasure of recently reading Be The Unicorn by William Vanderbloemen, and I have to say, it's worth reading. Will this be the silver bullet that lands you a new job overnight? No. Will it require work and self-reflection? Yes. Is it worth it? YES! The book explores 12 key traits that William and his recruiting team have identified over the years and how these traits are embodied by standout individuals, or "unicorns." It also shares insights and stories from the exceptional individuals they have successfully placed over the years. This book is a quick, engaging read that encourages you to apply these traits to your own life. My favorite part? Each chapter wraps up with a summary checklist, complete with a touch of humor. If you're fortunate to have your job and feel confident in your employment I want to say two things: 1) Practice gratitude. There are many people who are employed but don't feel confident in their job status. 2) Never stop learning. Pick this book up and try to read a chapter per day - it's worth it.
