Can orchestration help Distributed Energy Resources (DER) become the hero in meeting net zero? Given the challenges to rolling out large-scale generation and transmission projects, investments to accelerate DER uptake and orchestration could make DER the hero in meeting net zero. The EY Net Zero Centre Energy Infrastructure Executive Briefing Series explores three critical levers for Australia to pull to drive the net zero transition and create new value for consumers, businesses and our nation. In 2022, as part of moving into a new house, we installed solar and batteries and cut the gas connection. The process was surprisingly clunky when coordinating different trades and financing options ourselves, leading to us working with Goodbye Gas to streamline the process. As a result we are now a 'prosumer' of energy - i.e. producing our own energy and selling back to the grid. Managing the balance of energy consumption and grid exports is still relatively complex. For example, timing hot water systems, HVAC, car charging etc to operate at optimal times of day. While the cost and emissions benefits are significant, optimising this balance is an intimidating prospect for most households (who admittedly aren't quite as excited by this stuff as we are....) According to AEMO, this kind of distributed energy generation (DER) is likely to reach 120GW by 2050 across solar and storage. At least 27 GW of this will be 'dispatchable' via batteries and electric vehicles with bidirectional charging. Encouraging customers to install and manage this kit is one of the many challenges of decarbonisation in Australia. Our latest paper from the EY Net Zero Centre explains the need for 'orchestration' of DER in order to avoid adverse grid impacts, reduce costs and reward all customers with shared benefits.

Energy markets are a labyrinth and choice can disempower as well as empower customers. Consumer confidence matters to suppliers, and to all energy consumers, to increase engagement and participation in DER as well as build momentum for the energy transition. How can we empower consumers rather than confuse them? In this three-part Energy Infrastructure Executive Briefing Series, developed by the EY Net Zero Centre, we explore three critical levers for Australia to pull to drive the net zero transition and create new value for consumers, businesses and our nation.
