Power systems for dynamic positioning (DP) on offshore and other vessels can be integrated using closed bus-ties that allow the transfer of electrical power and load-sharing between different redundancy groups of gensets and thrusters to save fuel, emissions and maintenance costs.     But there is also a higher risk of failure propagation between power groups compared with segregated systems using open bus-ties, which have been the industry standard.    Recent advances in technology have come a long way in countering the risk of failure propagation to enhance the safety of closed-bus systems – and DNV has updated its guidelines in this area accordingly.    “The revised recommended practice provides a new updated framework for robust implementation of closed bus-tie systems that can take advantage of available technology and thereby leverage the benefits for decarbonization and digitalization,” Aleks Karlsen, Senior Principal Specialist in DP Systems, explains.
