"Invest in women!" - Serena Williams Did you know that besides being the GOAT in tennis, Serena has run her VC Serena Ventures for the past decade? She spoke to Kara Swisher at HubSpot's Inbound last week and shared why she chose to help other woman and POC succeed in business. Serena Ventures has so far invested in 14 companies that have reached unicorn status (ie $1B+ net-worth). With the recent news of the wage gap between men and women increasing, curious to hear what you think business leaders could and should be doing to lift up female business owners and executives to positively impact our economy? Check out this article by Tegan Jones highlighting the conversation below: https://lnkd.in/gs77PhDK

New on the Blog: In the eye-opening documentary "Show Her The Money, The Power of Funding Women Entrepreneurs," Catherine Gray, podcast host and founder of She Angel Investors, alongside many influential women, exposes a critical issue: Women secure less than 2% of annual venture capital funding, despite their businesses booming and contributing nearly $3 trillion to the U.S. economy. This film does more than highlight disparities; it's an empowering narrative that showcases the untapped potential of female entrepreneurs, whose ideas could revolutionize our world. It serves as a testament to the resilience and innovation of women, urging us to recognize the immense value they bring to the table. This documentary extends a compelling call to action to pivot towards a future where gender equality in entrepreneurship is not just a goal but a norm. "Fund women and save the world" is more than a rallying cry. It's a viable solution to fostering economic growth and equity. https://lnkd.in/gnhv7wNA

I’ve been doing a lot of research into women in business that is helping me firm up my hypothesis about why the percentage of women in business raising venture capital funding is so pitiful in comparison to their male counterparts. Before we go on to blame a male dominated industry, we need to look within the female approach to business building. It is significantly different. From my findings thus far, it seems most women just don’t care to build growth businesses. They seem to fear larger than life growth opportunities & prefer to ‘tick along’ because they have familial pulls on their time and as the years advance, a less intense life is preferred. Yes, living bill to bill seems to be a less intense life than to build profitable, growth businesses. It’s one thing if they try to build viable businesses but majority women don’t even have the ambition to do so. They don’t focus on numbers. Nope! They focus on the frilly aspects of running a business such as graphics, design, marketing, social media & girly networking events that don’t push the needle purposefully enough. What’s more disconcerting is that they run from money talk! If majority women in business have a ‘making money mindset’ problem, how on earth will they ever be ready to go for venture capital funding? They won’t. The industry chatter on fixing the problem of low percentage of female founders being VC funded is simply applying a plaster on the issue without addressing the core problem. We can expect governments around the world to do more to change cultures and attitudes towards women building growth businesses and seeking venture capital, but not without addressing underlying factors. Recently, I had the opportunity to contribute my views on the role governments can play in the following article: https://lnkd.in/dZKHQXPn I’d love to hear from women in business connections on my findings. In support or against what I’ve observed, I’d like to hear your views on whether venture capital funding would ever be a consideration for you. Do you feel worthy or does it feel like a misaligned goal? Or perhaps you feel venture capital is just too aggressive an approach to grow profitable female led businesses? #theaishaejaz #womeninbusiness #femalefounders #venturecapital #businessangels #businessgrowth #fundraising

In this month of International Women, and as the father of two aspiring daughters, their working mother/my wife and to the many amazing women in my network, I am compelled to share this article from our friends at PitchBook. I have been in the company of some amazing, powerful, enterprising female founders as clients and friends and frankly could rightly do with more support from the investment community. #femalefounders #femaleinvestors #venturecapital #femaleentrepreneurship
