As a domestic abuse survivor, my biggest regret is not speaking out about the abuse sooner. Looking back, I deeply regret all the time I wasted with someone who wasn't the person I initially thought they were. I regret missing out on happier times and experiences I could have shared with my children. My children also missed out on experiences and bonding time with their paternal family, from whom I had become estranged. For years, I lived my life like a dress rehearsal, detached from reality. I believed and hoped that someday things would change, and my life would improve. However, nothing changed until I reached my lowest point and opened up about the abuse to my best friend, who reported it to the local authorities. You may feel you have few friends left and that you've alienated your family to the point where they've given up on you. However, the opposite is more likely true: you will be welcomed back with open arms and given the support you need. If you don't feel ready to tell a friend or family member, please contact ManKind. The ManKind Initiative is a charity that helps male victims and their children escape from domestic abuse. It runs a national helpline with a trained team providing practical advice, information, signposting, and emotional support to victims. This support is also extended to concerned friends, family members, and work colleagues. There is hope, and you can escape the abuse. During challenging periods, I found solace in the poem 'Don't Quit' by John Greenleaf Whittier. If you are trapped in an abusive relationship, remember that "It's when things seem worst that you must not quit." Never lose hope. In your darkest moments, remember that this too shall pass. Don't wait and put it off - speak to someone now about the abuse you are suffering and start living the life you deserve. This was me - walking on eggshells, 24/7, in my own home, for years and years. It’s no way to live. But it was so normal to me that I didn’t even notice. I am a long time out of my abusive relationship, but I am very aware of that feeling of ‘walking-on-eggshells’ and when it comes up for me. I don’t ignore it anymore because it is a sign to me that something is not right around me. I can then try and understand what that is, take control and make the best decisions for my wellbeing and happiness. This is advice I now give to my Clients - don’t ignore those feelings you once had around your abusive ex partner that may come up again in your future. Use them as a sign & take action. We cannot stop abusive people coming into our environment, but we can stop them from getting into our lives and affecting us by: 🔺knowing the signs of domestic abuse 🔺taking notice of what is going on around us & feelings within us 🔺and then taking appropriate action to safeguard ourselves and our children if applicable. I have a specialism in domestic abuse, if you are walking on eggshells talk to me and I can help you find a way forward. #domesticviolence #domesticabuse #VAWG #walkingoneggshells #divorcecoach #relationshipcoach #healthyrelationships #coercivecontrol #postseparationabuse
Many people in abusive relationships don't know that what they are experiencing is abuse. The abusive behaviour usually starts slowly, and eventually becomes normalised. Perpetrators may conceal their behaviour outwardly, and often isolate their victims from friends and family who would otherwise pick up on the abuse. Victim-survivors of domestic abuse may struggle to see themselves as such, but awareness and acknowledgement is the first step towards escaping abuse and rebuilding their lives. We want to make everyone aware that help and support is out there. Access our public support service directory here and share it within your organisation: https://lnkd.in/ev-kKPzk
