#JustTheFacts #HumanTraffickingIsReal #OnlineSafetyStartsAtHome The Internet has revolutionized the way traffickers recruit victims, and children are especially vulnerable, as their innocence makes them easily persuaded. Sex traffickers increasingly turn to social media and online platforms to recruit children as they can use the content of their social media posts to to identify potential victims and strike up a relationship with them. Oftentimes, it is through the creation of a false identity that pretends to be of a similar age or background, and leads to the exploitation of their victim. In fact, 1 in 6 kids ages 9 to 12 admit to having had inappropriate conversations with an online-only contact, either romantic or sexual in nature. Start the conversation. Prepare your child for the evil that lurks behind the screen. One out of every five kids gets sexual solicitations online. Strangers, predators, and cyber-bullies all target children, and their work is simplified when screen names reveal age, gender, or hometown. Here's a few tips to prevent your child from being targeted. 📢 Start the Conversation with your child - keep the lines of communication open and moving freely. 📌 Know who your child talks to online. Review her buddy list: does she really know everyone, or are some buddies "friends of friends"? Have her remove anyone she hasn't met in person. ❗ Tell him not to exchange personal information like a phone number, address, best friend's name, or picture. No party invitations, revealing details, or meeting in person — ever. #internetsafetyforkids #internetsafety #SafetyWhileAccessingTechnology #educateandequip #SafeSurfinFoundation #CyberSWAT #empowerkids #changingonlinesafety #SafeSurfin #protectingkidsonline #savethekids #onlinepredators #internetcrimesagainstchildren #keepkidssafe #ProtectYourKids #ProtectKidsOnline #OnlineSafetyStartsAtHome #JustTheFacts

Despite the lay-language used throughout this article, it’s a really important article for 3 reasons: 1️⃣ It helps to educate the general public that they too can be targetted by sexualised deepfake abuse, and that this isn’t a type of abuse solely directed towards celebrities (as first discussed in Fido et al., 2022). 2️⃣ It notes the overlap that this type of abuse can - and did, in this case - have with child sexual abuse material. 3️⃣ It highlights that such abuse digital sexual abuse can occur despite the depths that survivors go to in protecting themselves online; further noting how the focus should remain on the perpetrators of sexualise deepfakes.

Age verification for X? As #SCOTUS is assessing whether persons accessing sexually explicit content need to provide proof of age, the question is whether such proof of age (ID, biometric scan, driver’s license) should then be required not only for #porn sites but also for other platform disseminating sexual violence, child sexual abuse materials, hate speech and similar content that is harmful for young people in particular? https://lnkd.in/dcKUYX8M #csam #twitter #ocsea

“Criminalising creating sexually explicit deepfakes would target the root cause of this abuse. It would send a message to perpetrators and society that this is wrong and harmful. Importantly, it says to women that we recognise this threat and abuse; we hear you.” - Clare McGlynn, speaking to Lucy Morgan of Glamour UK In the UK a former security guard Gavin Plumb possessed over 10,000 nonconsensual sexual digital forgeries (#AI generated #deepfake #sexualviolence images) of TV presenter Holly Willoughby ( and he was plotting her kidnap, rape and murder- even soliciting for assistance until a U.S. law enforcement officer infiltrated this chats). He is now sentenced to life in prison, to serve 16 years. This horrific case clearly lays out what survivors and advocates have been saying this entire time: 1. Whether you are highly public figure like #TaylorSwift or #AOC or a teen girl in a rural community college... the devastation and potential for offline abuse is very real. 2. This is a crime that has ever lasting tails that follow the women and girls who are abused throughout every facet of their lives. 3. We can't neatly just separate the on and offline worlds - sexual violence is sexual violence. 4. We do need comprehensive and survivor-centered laws that protect survivors, not platforms or abusers. 5. We need to listen to survivors experiences if we want to create these comprehensive bills. As the U.S. moves toward federal legislation, this is a cautionary case to follow - our laws should protect everyone if we want to ensure that there are truly less victims tomorrow.
