On rainy days like this, it's hard to think about long-term #drought. But we're always thinking about it. LASAN is pleased with State of California Water Resources Control Board's decision to provide a path forward for Direct Potable Reuse (#DPR) in step with important California #legislation calling for increased #recycledwater access across the State. The new DPR regulations will add another important tool for #sanitation and #water agencies to expand the production of #recycledwater in #California, while protecting public health and the environment. Together with our partners — Mayor Karen Bass, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and the environmental community we have developed two pilot projects — the Hyperion Advanced Water Purification Facility and the Hyperion Membrane Bioreactor Pilot Facility - that will provide the foundation of our #Hyperion2035 Program to transform the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant to 100% water recycling by providing up to 230 million gallons per day of high-quality purified, recycled water. With an eye toward the future, LASAN has long-planned for this day. Since the 1990s, we have implemented several vital initiatives to propel us to a more sustainable future—prioritizing our most precious resource—water. LASAN commends the staff of the State of California’s Division of Drinking Water for closely working with municipalities and #utilities, stakeholders, academia, and the industry in developing a robust set of regulations for #directpotablereuse. The Ohio River Basin grapples with various environmental issues, including pollution from industrial waste, coal mines, agricultural runoff, and sewage systems. These challenges disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color, who often lack the resources to effectively address them. ➡ However, local initiatives offer hope. Communities are demonstrating the potential for change through actions like dam removal, acid mine drainage cleanup, and green infrastructure projects. An excellent example is the installation of a green roof at Oyler School in Cincinnati by Groundwork Ohio River Valley Green Corps members, aimed at reducing pollution and managing stormwater runoff. Last month’s “Replenishing Groundwater in the San Joaquin Valley” report from the Public Policy Institute of California provided a rare viewpoint for us to see exactly how far we've come along the slow march to water balance in California. The report’s findings included evidence of a 17% increase in groundwater recharge volume between 2017 and 2023, as well as a nearly twofold increase in on-farm recharge volume. These trends validate the hard work of all those who helped move the needle on groundwater recharge in the past six years and inspired me to write a guest opinion column in the Sacramento, Modesto, and Fresno Bees as well as the Merced Sun-Star. While there is no silver bullet in the pursuit of California water security, groundwater recharge is one cost-effective tool for mitigating both the peaks and troughs of our water supply. We sincerely thank our partners on the cutting edge of agriculture, water management, and policy for forging a sustainable water future by piloting and promoting recharge projects. 2023 was a banner year for recharge, but we must keep going to realize its full potential in California. https://lnkd.in/gFBnWXqF

LinkedIn is no place for politics, but this ‘manifesto’ by i newspaper is a great idea – they are asking ALL the parties to support their five pledges to save our rivers. The pledges are: 1. Improve river health: 77% rivers in good health by 2027. 2. Cut sewage spills: Sewage spills will not damage high-priority areas – including bathing spots and nature sites – by 2030. 3. Tougher watchdog: Regulators will stop water companies destroying the environment in pursuit of profit. 4. 100 clean bathing sites: Create 100 clean bathing spots in rivers by 2030. 5. Responsible farming: Farmers must be funded to improve water quality, and face enforcement action if they damage the environment. Deborah Meaden, from #Dragon’sDen, endorses the project. She says, “Our rivers are the lifeblood for people and nature and they are in a terrible state with no clear plan to heal and protect them. It is essential that any incoming government fully commits to cleaning up our precious waterways and that is why i‘s rivers manifesto is so important.” The manifesto is expected to attract a lot of support and hopefully will be a great way of pushing for conservation of the UK’s river network. #savebritainsrivers #conservation #waterways

Support the landowner • Support the forests How can you support keeping more land in trees today? 1) Support policies which support the landowner’s ability and flexibility to manage their land. Their goals all vary in different techniques and practices and timing, but with all the same fundamental foundation to be good stewards and maintain their land within the family in trees. 2) Recognize the renewable resource wood and timber sourced in America is! There is constantly concerns about deforestation, and although those are real concerns in many areas, in America there’s actually a growing surplus of volume of timber compared to removals! 3) Use more wood, as often and as much as possible! Keeping strong markets for timber is one of the BEST ways to support the landowner. This gives them strong markets to sell their timber to as well as flexibility to pick which markets and rotation times (long or short) are best to match their goals! Without strong markets many families may be forced to sell their timberland because of their lack of financial stability to replant the land in trees.
