Today, we highlight the sixth way our seafarers contribute to their ship’s emotional safety: By developing a cohesive work environment where there is no senior or junior demarcation, seafarers promote a culture of inclusivity and collaboration. Onboard a ship, the sense of hierarchy can sometimes create barriers. However, our seafarers break down these barriers by ensuring everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of rank. This approach encourages open communication, teamwork, and a sense of belonging among all crew members. By nurturing an inclusive environment, they make sure that every voice is heard and appreciated, leading to stronger bonds and a more supportive atmosphere on board. This cohesion not only enhances productivity but also significantly contributes to the emotional well-being of the crew. Capt. Pradeep Chawla, CEO of MarinePALS rightly points out in this article in SAFETY4SEA that greater investment in seafarer support is essential, especially as we will be reliant on crew to help successfully navigate the challenges and opportunities of decarbonisation and its associated new fuels and technologies. Looking after crew’s well-being will ensure that the industry remains resilient, attract new talent and retain the experienced crews we will need for the future. Unfortunately, he points out, there is an alarming rise in mental health issues among seafarers exacerbated by challenges like the pandemic and the rapid escalation of geopolitical tensions. Despite this, there is a lack of publicly available data on seafarer health and well-being that is needed to see the true scale of the issue. “We need to find ways as an industry to share more company data on these issues and build a truer picture of the problems we face to resolve them” he argues. Captain Chawla stresses that mental health must be treated with the same priority as physical injuries. With studies showing up to 28% of seafarers experience depression, and between 8% to 25% reporting workplace bullying the industry needs to foster a culture that supports open communication, stigma-free environments and access to essential resources. Training can help here, and MarinePALS has created resources in the form of bite-sized videos to help seafarers tackle some of these issues. Investment in quality and easily accessible training and well-being resources is key to helping resolve shipping’s mental health crisis. He notes better internet access at sea is essential to access training and resources for crews, as well as keeping them connected with loved ones. The latest Seafarers Happiness Index report by the Mission to #Seafarers reveals an encouraging start to 2024. They observed an overall uplift in seafarer happiness, with the happiness score rising from 6.36 in Q4 2023 to 6.94 out of 10 for Q1 2024. These dedicated individuals spend long months at sea, ensuring the smooth flow of goods and resources across the world. Recognizing their immense contributions, we are excited to share the launch of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting shore leave for seafarers, enhancing their well-being and job satisfaction. **A Joint Effort for Seafarer #Welfare** This initiative, sponsored by Teng Huar Lee , supported by members of steering committee and working group, represents a collaborative effort involving one of GAC’s important customers Shell , GAC Singapore Sofie Bager, Mission to Seafarers Singapore Toh Soon Kok ,our service providers Tammy Ong and many more. Our goal is to create a supportive environment where seafarers can take much-needed breaks from their demanding work schedules and enjoy rest and recreation during their time at port. **The Importance of Shore Leave** Shore leave is not just a luxury; it is a necessity. Extended periods at sea can take a toll on seafarers' #mental and physical health. Providing opportunities for shore leave helps mitigate the effects of isolation and fatigue, allowing seafarers to recharge and reconnect with the world outside their ships. This, in turn, leads to improved morale, productivity, and overall job satisfaction. **Kickstarting the Initiative** Our first test run commenced on a lovely Sunday morning, 14th Jul. This pilot phase involved a selected group of seafarers, who were granted shore leave to experience the benefits firsthand. We have meticulously planned the logistics to ensure a seamless process, from transportation to recreational activities. **Gathering Feedback for Continuous Improvement** Feedback is crucial to the success of this initiative. We will be collecting input from seafarers, and local partners to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments. Our aim is to refine the process and expand the initiative to other stakeholders in the future. **Looking Ahead** This initiative marks a significant step forward in our commitment to seafarer welfare. By promoting shore leave, we are not only enhancing the well-being of the crew members but also fostering a more #sustainable and #resilient maritime industry. The results of the latest Seafarers Happiness Index report released by The Mission to Seafarers suggest that those working at sea have concerns about their safety, which is a contributing factor to a fourth consecutive drop in seafarer happiness recorded. Seafarers also mentioned feeling overburdened, under appreciated, disconnected and highlighted concerns over a lack of shore leave and an inability to contact family.
