Anyone want to watch a Malaysian film, for free, as your first film of the year? Pendatang means immigrant in Malay and still used towards Chinese and Indian Malaysians. Yes, this film is about race. Specifically race in Malaysia - a multiracial country: with Malays, Chinese, Indians, Indigenous people (over 60 different groups) and people called "dan lain-lain" which means "and others" generally Eurasian, Serani, Portuguese... and others. Malaysia is beautifully multiracial and multicultural - indeed we boast about it: "Malaysia, Truly Asia" is our tourism tagline - because where else would you get Malays, Chinese and Indians in one place?! Ok, Singapore, our little brother country that broke away. But there is a racial tension and always have been. This film, Pendatang, intends to spark discussion. Set in an alternative dystopian reality - races are segregated, and we see a Chinese family reassigned a family home - moving into one which was clearly Malay - a traditional kampung house. What happened to the previous family, their furniture and photos still present? Races are forbidden to interact - jail of 20 years at least if you do. But... there is a young Malay girl hiding in the attic. What do the family do? The film is in Cantonese, with a little Malay, and you can choose your subtitles. The producers knew there was no way this film would get past the censors, so they crowdsourced (USD$70k) from the public to make it - and have released it on YouTube so we can all watch it. It was launched on 21st December 2023, and over 700k views on YouTube - definitely way more than a million people - as most of us watched it with others. Content Warning: There are violent scenes, after the first half. Click on the link for the full movie. #Pendatang #Race #Malaysia https://lnkd.in/exaMRr4d

I watched this a few days ago Animah. As a Malaysian - ‘lain lain’, who grew up in a majority Malaysian Chinese neighbourhood..there was so much about the storyline that made me realise what we take for granted in a multiethnic- multi religious - multi cultural community. I say well done to all involved with the minimal budget to create this movie. And to get this crowdfunded - just wow ! Believe there are quite a few movies directed by Malaysians that are pushing the dial. The one I want to watch next is Tiger Stripes. Have you seen it yet ?

Thank you Animah Kosai for sharing this. I will watch it. Alrhough, it's set in an alternative dustpian reality, it's a scary thought to imagine that what can transpire as we see happening to the people in Gaza. Our work towards making systemic change must go on.
