Great to see more studies in this area! 😊 👏 From the 2021, The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine "Equine activities may reverse a trajectory of worsening problems. This may especially affect symptoms related to ADHD. Conclusion: Equine programs may offer an alternative method to reduce poor behaviour and improve attention in young people. Benefits in attention may occur even without specific therapeutic content or therapist involvement. It is proposed that some of these benefits come directly from the horse and the interactions with the horse, others are contextual." Annick Maujean https://lnkd.in/ePrrhEQK

October 13 - 19 is OCD Awareness Week, dedicated to dispelling the myths about obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and breaking the stigma around mental illness. Some people feel the term "OCD" may be overused due to generalized stereotypes within the media, and those who live with symptoms day-to-day often hesitate to seek help due to feelings of shame or common misconceptions. In fact, the International OCD Foundation reports that it can take between 10-17 years for an individual with OCD to receive proper treatment. As I've discussed many times and will continue to reinforce: awareness and having open conversations are critical first steps in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health conditions and encouraging those who are struggling to access support when needed. I am thrilled to bring additional perspectives on how mental health can affect veterinary professionals through lived experience in our profession. In the latest Reviving Veterinary Medicine guest blog, Dr. Ashley Marrs explores surprising aspects of OCD and how hidden symptoms can manifest in practice. Head over to the blog to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gZaf99gH While individuals without OCD can exhibit similar behaviours due to workplace stress, if these thoughts and behaviours begin to impact daily functioning, a diagnosis should be made with the support of a mental health professional. This #OCDWeek, whether you share facts, tell your own story, or learn more about how to support your colleagues, you are making a difference. #OCD #OCDAwareness #VeterinaryWellness #VeterinaryWellbeing #ThursdayThoughts #VeterinaryMedicine #MentalHealthAwareness #ObsessiveCompulsiveDisorder #RevivingVetMed

How to calculate effective size of population and the rate of inbreeding Effective population size is the number of individuals in a population who contribute offspring to the next generation. In an ecological sense, the size of a population can be measured by simply counting the number of adults in a locality. However, for the theory of population genetics what matters is the chance that two copies of a gene will be sampled as the next generation is produced, and this is affected by the breeding structure of the population. In a population of size N there will be 2N genes. The correct interpretation of N for the theoretical equations is that N has been correctly measured when the chance of drawing two copies of the same gene is \(1/2N\)2. If we draw two genes from a population at a locality, we may be more likely for various reasons to get two copies of the same gene than would be implied by the naive ecological measure of population size. Population geneticists therefore often write Ne \(for 'effective' population size\) in the equations, rather than N. In practice, effective population sizes are usually lower than ecologically observed population sizes. Youtube video: https://lnkd.in/d5phjGZB \#nikolays_genetics_lessons

"Some persons with PIMD are able to use a few words or symbols, but the majority communicate non-verbally through signals such as eye contact, body language, vocalisations, and facial expressions (Bellamy et al., 2010; van der Putten et al., 2017). As a result, these persons are limited in their ability to communicate the presence of pain verbally, and are therefore heavily dependent on other people's ability to recognise it (van der Putten & Vlaskamp, 2011). Furthermore, these communicative signals are often subtle and can have various meanings in different circumstances, which makes them hard to understand and easy to miss (van der Putten et al., 2017). At the same time, adults with PIMD are at a high risk of enduring pain due to numerous serious and co-occurring physical health problems such as epilepsy, constipation, recurrent respiratory infections, and gastroesophageal reflux (van Timmeren, van der Schans, et al., 2017; van Timmeren, Waninge, et al., 2017). Persons with PIMD are not only at a higher risk of experiencing pain due to a higher rate of medical conditions, they can also experience substantial pain from daily care, such as being dressed or bathed, due to a combination of musculoskeletal problems and the amount of movement involved in these activities (Bodfish et al., 2006; van der Putten & Vlaskamp, 2011). Moreover, pain can also cause other problems, such as sleep (Breau & Camfield, 2011) and behavioural issues (Peebles & Price, 2012; Poppes et al., 2016). As a result, a failure to address pain may negatively affect quality of life for the person, as well as for their environment (Bodfish et al., 2006). Therefore, adequate assessment of pain in adults with PIMD is of great importance."
