Researchers have introduced a game-changing concept that could transform the management and utilization of wood waste in the economy. They have developed a unique water-based “wood ink” derived from natural wood components, which can be used in 3D printing to create a variety of wooden structures and objects. The main goal of this innovative approach is to promote waste reduction by providing a sustainable and eco-friendly method to upcycle and recycle wood waste. Instead of allowing wood scraps to contribute to environmental pollution, this technology offers a valuable opportunity to convert them into functional and customizable 3D-printed wooden items. The wood ink formulation includes lignin and cellulose nanomaterials, critical components of wood that enhance its mechanical properties. This story started when I saw an advert for an OEM claiming that water-based ink is good in itself—which it isn't. Many printers focus on CO2e and claim to be sustainable by offsetting and reducing their emissions, but the truth is more complex. In this first of more films, we talk to Axel Fischer from Ingede about de-inking, which has become increasingly important as moving to digital challenges some paper mills handling recycled fibers - but listen to Axel Fischer. Later, we will interview different people about ink, energy consumption, paper, transport, varnishes, etc. What worries me is that we warrant sustainable products to our customers without knowing whether this is factual. In that context, we will also look into how to measure, i.e., CO2e, having a critical view on the companies that promise various CO2 offset schemes - and help you figure out what's up and down in a VERY complex reality! That's a wrap for the (2nd Annual) 2024 #SmartMTX in Red Deer! I didn't think it would be possible to beat the first one, but this one was even better. The connections made were of the highest caliber. 3DSpaceTerraform was invited to present our "alternative materials in construction and 3D printing" research and technology development display to Premier Danielle Smith, as part of her Expo Tour. It goes without saying that we are pretty excited about using local agricultural and earthen materials in engineered product development, and we daresay the Alberta Premier was intrigued and excited as well. Alberta is an incredible place for natural resources. From hemp fiber to local minerals for binders, we literally "have it going on." Our ability to develop technology and products is unmatched; we have the land, the resources, and the people who truly care. It isn't talked about in the news as much, but our holistic food movement, alternative building movement, and permaculture-focused living movement are rich and matured and very active. What's next? Well, we made additional connections at the show, particularly around funding for the next stages of technology development for hempcrete 3D printing (insulative extrusion development) - part of what we need for Canadian-appropriate 3D printed construction. It's time to scale up and apply our long experience in alternative conventional construction with the potential of 3D printed construction. I am excited to share that I have successfully completed (and passed with Merit classification) my Dissertation on the future of Sustainable Construction in the United States! In my research, I explored Net Zero Buildings, Green Retrofitting, 3D Printing/Additive Construction, and Fossil Fuel Alternatives, conducting detailed SWOT analyses on each concept. Key findings revealed the immense potential of Net Zero Buildings to reduce energy consumption by 75%, although challenges persist due to initial investment barriers. 3D Printing offers significant waste reduction by 60% and labor cost savings of up to 80%, despite existing regulatory hurdles. Green Retrofitting showcases emission reductions and cost efficiencies, yet scaling poses challenges. Meanwhile, fossil fuel alternatives have the capacity to slash emissions by 40%, but face supply chain constraints. For more information on my research, feel free to reach out to me!
