It’s onwards and upwards for Tromsø, the undisputed Northern Lights champion!✨ A recent Low Season Traveller – Issue 7 article by Ryan Maley provides some key insights, as stated in the sub-title: “Lying well within the Arctic Circle, the city of Tromsø in northern Norway is home to a plethora of the world’s most northerly attractions. The city was a perfect choice for a recent trip to celebrate my 30th birthday, offering once-in-a-lifetime winter experiences within easy reach from most European destinations, alongside superb city-centre culture and gastronomy.” Maley also points to prices in Tromsø being similar to the UK and to the surprising ease of getting there, with many direct flights from London, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris. At Damosa Land, we are expanding our footprint in the hospitality industry here in Davao. 17 years ago, we secured the franchise rights for Microtel by Wyndham under PHINMA to develop two branches in Davao City and General Santos City. This year, we embark on our third project under this partnership and first condotel named TRYP, situated on the scenic Samal Island in Davao Region. As we navigate the dynamic hospitality and tourism landscape, we're eager to serve an increasing number of guests while gaining insights into their preferences and travel/spending behaviors, ultimately contributing to the region's economic growth. Earlier this year, the Philippine Statistics Authority revealed that in 2023, accommodations emerged as a key driver of economic success in Davao, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. What actually attracts people to travel to certain places? It's CULTURE. I feel for some of our whānau across Te Moana Nui a Kiwa being used 'cultural performers'. These big hotel chains love to flaunt their 'connection' with local people and culture. Yet, once the performance is over, they are out the back doing their mahi... until the next performance. How can we showcase our ahurea to the world whilst also protecting it? How can we monetise our ahurea without changing it to the sound of profit? How can we honour the mahi of our performers as a key selling point for tourism? If culture is a big part of tourism, than we must honour it as such. Otherwise, an island is just as good as the island next door. He whakaaro noa iho. Engari, he wānanga kei roto i ēnei kōrero.
