🌟 Today, we honor Juneteenth, our country’s second Independence Day. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, declaring freedom for more than 250,000 enslaved Americans. This pivotal moment serves as a powerful reminder: none are free until we are all free. ✊🏾 Juneteenth is a critical time for all of us as it serves as a reminder that equality and justice in society isn’t a destination—it’s a journey we must continue to work toward every day. Recognizing Juneteenth and its importance is just the first step in that journey. We must continue to work toward the development of a society for all, and that is a journey that will require the efforts of all of us. 🌟 The Untold Origins of Memorial Day: Honoring Black G.I.s 🌟 As we observe Memorial Day, it’s important to recognize the profound and often overlooked history behind this day of remembrance. Did you know that Memorial Day’s origins are deeply entwined with the contributions of Black soldiers during and after the Civil War? Here are some key points from my latest article: ✅ Charleston, 1865: In April 1865, Black residents of Charleston, SC, many of whom were formerly enslaved, organized the first Memorial Day event to honor fallen Union soldiers. ✅ A Grassroots Movement: On May 1, 1865, approximately 10,000 people gathered to give Union soldiers a proper burial, decorate their graves with flowers, and hold a commemorative parade. ✅ Disparities in Treatment: The article delves into the historical and ongoing disparities in treatment between white and Black soldiers and veterans, highlighting the need for systemic change. ✅ Legacy and Reflection: It also discusses the broader implications of this history and the exploitation of economically disadvantaged communities for military recruitment. This day, known as Juneteenth, marks a pivotal moment in history—emancipation from slavery in the U.S.  Our CEO Fernando Muñiz reflects, “Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. As Juneteenth approaches, Calvert County is proud to honor the remarkable contributions of African American soldiers who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War. The Calvert County Department of Planning & Zoning, Historic Preservation, in collaboration with the Calvert Historical Society, is driving an ongoing historical preservation initiative to highlight the stories of these unsung heroes who helped shape Calvert County and American history. Through detailed research using service and pension records, Freedmen’s Bureau records, census data and historic maps and imagery, this project brings to light the significant, yet often overlooked, contributions of African Americans to the county’s history. Research findings have already revealed the profound impact these individuals had in shaping the community. Often having to escape enslavement to volunteer, these men served, fought battles and many returned to establish institutions that remain pillars of our community to this day: from churches and schools to the living legacy of their descendants. These stories reinforce the lasting influence of African Americans on Calvert County’s culture and society. Residents are encouraged to contribute to this historical preservation effort by sharing any information they may have about their ancestors who served in the USCT. On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States. But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, the national holiday marking the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Texas, delivering the news of freedom to Black people two and half years after the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. While we celebrate the final blow to the horrific institution of slavery in 1865, we must acknowledge the continued challenges and barriers many face due to the lack of affordable and reliable access to broadband.  Communication connectivity is crucial! Equity in broadband access is an objective across MCJ’s advocacy campaigns. Equal access is key for all Mississippians, regardless of their race or income, to have the digital education, healthcare, and employment resources necessary for success in today’s world. These are the battles we continue to fight every day. Together, we can honor the legacy of Juneteenth by working towards a more just and equitable future for all. #Juneteenth #MCJ #Justice #Equity
