During November, we ran a poll asking if you feel your business has a culture of confidence and honesty regarding financial wellbeing. We gave you these options: 1️⃣ Yes 2️⃣ No 3️⃣ Yes, but it could be better 4️⃣ No, but we’re working on it 📢 The results are in, with 50% of respondents recognising that although they have a culture where financial wellbeing is discussed, it could be better. 💚 This response is promising... World economics fluctuate, and the workplace must evolve to meet the changing needs of its people. Trust takes time to establish, and it's essential for employees to feel confident opening up about 'taboo' subjects. 🚫 More alarming is that we have a 38% 'no' but zero 'no, but we're working on it' response. Financial coaching significantly improves the wellbeing of financially-challenged employees, according to research by Washington University in St. Louis. The study, which examined the impacts of financial counseling for low- and moderate-income workers, found that employers can boost the financial wellness of their staff by providing services like financial education and coaching. "You may not realize it, but many of your employees are in financial distress. And they need your help." That's the opening line of a new Harvard Business Review article, based on a study revealing that 80% of American workers face financial stress, 27% of them at a high, even overwhelming level (Source: Financial Finesse). Do you think this problem is exclusive to the United States? Not at all! In Switzerland, no less than 22% of employees experience a high level of financial stress (Source: XpertHR). It's an undeniable fact. In fact, financial worries rank second among the reasons why employees turn to corporate assistance programs, just behind relationship problems (Source: ICAS Externe Mitarbeiterberatung DACH). Perhaps these two problems are more closely linked than we think... How can we remedy the situation? HBR suggests three essential steps: 1️⃣ Recognize that financial health requires an "ecosystemic" approach. This means creating an environment in which employees feel supported and can thrive. 2️⃣ Develop effective ways for your employees to understand and optimize the benefits you offer. Simply offering benefits does not guarantee that they will be understood and used. 3️⃣ Collaborate with an external, unbiased company to train your employees in financial wellness management. As Annamaria Lusardi, founder of the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC), explains, “It’s very important for financial wellness programs to be holistic and cover many financial decisions, not just saving for retirement, because the ultimate objective of managing your finances is to feel well, to take care of your family.” 👉 If you're contemplating taking steps in this direction, we are available to discuss the situation and develop an action plan tailored to your business.
