At our session on "Branching Out in STEM: Driving Innovation and Shaping the Future Together" in collaboration with Flipkart, Chella Pandian Pitchai, Global Head – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Biocon Biologics highlighted the critical need for establishing an ecosystem that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. He emphasized that companies must collaborate to create this ecosystem; otherwise, inclusive mindsets will struggle to flourish within organizations. He also pointed out that while many organizations have programs in place, it’s essential to engage with the education system to instill understanding of inclusion in students before they enter the workforce. Monitoring and measuring inclusivity within organizations is crucial as well. By doing this, we can attract diverse talent and spread the positive impact of inclusivity throughout the workplace. Flipkart’s Supply Chain Operations Academy (SCOA) partners with the Govt. ITI Kalyani, West Bengal, to empower local youth with skills for careers in the growing supply chain industry. Through an MoU, Flipkart and ITI Kalyani will establish a Center of Excellence (CoE) Lab featuring classrooms and simulation labs designed to provide hands-on training in supply chain operations. This initiative offers free training, certification, and 45 days of On-The-Job Training (OJT) or Industry Exposure (IE) at Flipkart facilities. With ITI Kalyani’s proximity to the Haringhata Bigbox facility, the program aligns training with real-world industry needs, helping bridge the skills gap in the region. In 2024, Flipkart SCOA trained and certified 4,200 individuals, including 826 women, highlighting Flipkart’s commitment to equipping India’s youth with the tools to succeed in e-commerce. Through such initiatives, Flipkart remains dedicated to fostering skill development and enabling career growth for India’s workforce. How do we build a workforce that’s diverse, empowered, and ready for the future? This engaging panel on Attracting a Diverse Talent Pool: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities, moderated by Ameesha Prabhu, Co-Founder & CEO, TRRAIN (TRUST FOR RETAILERS & RETAIL ASSOCIATES OF INDIA) and Retail Associates of India, explored how organisations are adapting to attract and retain talent from all walks of life. Chéri Bhengra, GM – People Resources, Westlife Foodworld Limited., shared an insightful perspective: “Employee experience drives customer experience. So, we focus on creating individual growth journeys for our people, even in our restaurants. It’s about showing them their potential and providing clear career paths.” She highlighted how McDonald’s invests in career development, with women rising to leadership roles as an example of the opportunities they offer. Dr. Srikanth PB, Group Head - Talent, Learning & OD, Raymond Limited, raised an important point: “Majority of our workforce is Gen Z. These young professionals crave personalized growth, so we offer them unique learning opportunities that align with their fast-paced ambitions.” His focus on hyper-personalization and transparent communication reflects the changing demands of today’s workforce. Manisha Patil (She/Her/Hers), Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Community Engagement Leader, Amazon, spoke about the power of understanding Gen Z’s aspirations: “This generation is about creating their own identity and business. We’ve developed programs like the artisan referral program to bring them online and offer sustainable livelihoods.” She also discussed how well-being and belonging are essential to retention, offering initiatives that support employees and their families. Saurabh Deshpande, Customer Care Associate & DVP – L&D, Shoppers Stop Ltd., echoed the need for balance: “It’s no longer just about experience; it’s about exposure and fresh perspectives.
