Do you watch Clarkson’s Farm? I’m going to use it as a reason to bang on about visual leadership again…. If you want your team to focus on your P&L then episode 6 of series three is an absolute master class in how visible leadership gets people to take responsibility for the things that matter. While it’s probably partly for the TV cameras - Jeremy and Kaleb’s farmed vs. unfarmed profit competition is outlined on a whiteboard in the office. They review it every episode. In a blink and you’ll miss it moment Kaleb shares that since these numbers were on here, and visible, he’s been turning his sprays off at the end of every trip up the field. With an estimated saving of over £2k. Against his 100k loss it’s marginal BUT that doesn’t mean it’s not meaningful. In a business with lots of Kaleb’s these wins add up quickly. He’s intentionally managing his numbers… because they’re ‘his’ in a way they wouldn’t be on a spreadsheet on a screen. Because they’re visible, and ‘live’ he cares in a totally different way than he otherwise would have done because Kaleb is someone who lives and breathes his craft - not numbers on a page. Probably just like lots of your team members do (much to your frustration!). So if you want people to take responsibility you have to get their priorities out of their screens and onto the walls. Just listened to an excellent The Wall Street Journal podcast with Damola Adamolekun, the new CEO of Red Lobster. From his conversation, I took away four critical questions every business should consider for strategic planning: 1️⃣ Can we financially support this initiative? Is it a long-term or short-term solution? 2️⃣ Do we have the operational capability to consistently execute this strategy? 3️⃣ How will this strategy impact the quality—both real and perceived—of our product? 4️⃣ How can we remove friction points to improve the customer experience? There's nothing better than being on the sidelines for a big win. The energy and the interviews are a blast. But I don't just cover wins. I talk athletes after big losses too. 🎥 | Welcome back to another new episode of FM Corner with Danny Koontz This week is a very simple topic, but one of huge importance. 👉 Learning by Listening!  Talking to people is a fundamental part of our job, but how many of us are good at listening and actually learning while listening?  To be a good listener, there are things to do and not do. 👇 🔸 Don't give directions to someone unless they ask. Listening for 5 minutes and then telling them what they should do is not the answer. Make sure they want direction before you just give it out. 🔸 Pay attention! Don't work on the answer while they are talking, you will likely miss the point they are trying to get out. 🔸 Try to see what their needs are, all while listening and taking notes in your head. 🔸 Do not jump to conclusions, listen , evaluate what they are saying.  🔸 Be objective - The other person is likely talking with you because they trust you, but start listening with a clean sheet of paper. 🔸Ask open ended questions to gain more feedback and understanding. What you think only matters if that is what the other person was looking for in the discussion. Simply, learn by Listening!  Thanks for watching FM Corner! Wild guess here, but I reckon the amount of CEOs that began their careers as a creative must be less than 1%. And yet, the people that do end up becoming phenomenal CEOs. So… why is that? Feels very much like our economy favours the ‘left brain hemisphere’ vs the righties. I think I’d put myself much more in the right side of the brain camp, I’m terrible with analytics and process, but know that my creativity as a CEO means we remain differentiated. James Greenfield is one of a very small number of CEOs that started off as a Designer. And I think that’s mostly because he learned very quickly about the commercials of creativity. He knew that no matter how beautifully designed something was, a client could kill 2 weeks of work in a heartbeat. So… he leant into the stuff that wasn’t atypical of a creative person. I firmly believe that, CEO or not, every person in a creative role should have a commercial understanding of their craft. What sells? Why?
