I recently completed watching several insightful sessions of the 2024 School Counseling Summit by CharacterStrong. There were so many experts in the field of school counseling and SEL who offered unfiltered perspectives of the ground reality of mental wellbeing within school systems. Here are my key takeaways: 💡 There is a huge mental health crisis in the post- COVID world and the educational systems are no longer supporting all the needs of the learners. Most #schoolcounselors are reaching burnout and engaging more in crisis management. Therefore, whole community collaborations must take the forefront. 💡 Taking input from everyone in the educational community. #Collaboration with the #leadershipteam must be prioritized. 💡 Meeting parents and families where they are, rather than expecting them to be elsewhere (more ideal) is unhelpful. Ask them directly what their needs are and take active steps to provide them with a system change. 💡 The current solutions practiced by schools are missing the mark. These usually involve the removal of the triggers. The focus must be laid on teaching learners skills to cope with the triggers. It is work- in- progress and will take time, but it needs to start somewhere. 💡 There must be a shift from 'self-care' towards 'community care'. 💡 Every teacher can be involved in SEL. School counselors can begin by stepping into classrooms, modeling expected responses, and then slowly allowing the transition toward being teacher-led completely. 💡 The smallest shifts and changes can make a big difference. Teaching #deepbreathing and practicing it often can be very helpful to keep the balance in an always energized school environment. The mental health crisis among students is a pressing concern that demands our collective attention. Every student deserves a supportive environment where they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. To effectively combat student suicide, we must implement a multifaceted approach: 🔹 Promote Mental Health Education: Educate students, teachers, and parents about mental health and wellness to reduce stigma and increase awareness. 🔹 Enhance Counseling Services: Ensure that schools have accessible and professional mental health support to address students' needs promptly. 🔹 Foster a Supportive Environment: Build a culture of inclusivity and open communication within schools to help students feel valued and connected. 🔹 Implement Early Intervention: Train educators to recognize signs of distress and provide timely support to students in need. 🔹 Engage with Parents: Educate and involve parents in mental health initiatives to support students beyond the classroom. By working together—educators, parents, and communities—we can create a safer, more supportive environment for our students. Let's commit to proactive measures and make mental health a priority in every school. #StudentMentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness #Education #Counseling #SupportiveSchools #EarlyIntervention #CommunitySupport #MentalWellness #StudentSuccess #LinkedInCommunity PW (PhysicsWallah)PW Gurukulam SchoolAlakh Pandey (PhysicsWallah)Alakh Pandey (PhysicsWallah)Prateek Maheshwari
