Taking a look back at some of Maia Films best work and wanted to share this one with my education sector network. A really great "intake film" with Aberdeen University that is customised for every student that receives it. Imagine receiving this film once you've won your place at the Uni! It has your own name on the envelope and then gives you a flavour of what it would be like to attend through a student POV style of filming. Why it's good... 1. By sending these films out to students who have won a place, you can reduce "drop off" of those who have more than one offer. Increasing your acceptance rate. 2. Through POV style, it gives you a first person perspective of what life might be like at the Uni. 3. It makes Aberdeen look fun, particularly by ending up on the beach and helping students imagine their life at the Uni. Lessons I Learned from Film School 🎬 Take 1: Note the location - 2007 I started my film journey at the University of Manitoba. The film classes were a bit more theoretical than I was expecting but when I found out we we’re going to be watching movies in class, I was sold. Classes started on a Thursday and Intro to Film was a three hour slot that ran both Tuesdays and Thursdays with one class in a theatre, secretly tucked behind the university’s main library, and the other in a small classroom in a totally different building on the opposite end of campus. Starting off my university career strong, I headed to the classroom and I’ll remind you, dear reader, that it’s a Thursday. So I silently sat in a room of eight people waiting for class to start while the others already seemed to be fast friends. Weird—I guess people make friends really fast in university. I brushed it off. Things started lining up when the prof walked in and handed out the syllabus— I’m in a fourth year film class that I now have to excuse myself out of, run halfway across campus to find my intro class in a theatre that (I’ll come to find out) is notoriously hard to find. I jog into class, breathless (film pun intended) only to be called out for being late to jump right into another syllabus that, luckily, seems more like one what I signed up. We watch "A Trip to the Moon" and "The Arrival of a Train" and I realize that movies haven't been around that long. TLDR: Note the location. In film, we talk about locations a lot. View location as a storytelling tool—How does it contribute to the story? What’s the value? Why this location? Why this time of day? And I learned this was by not pay attention to the location, which only underscored the value of locations and the expectations the setting can set.  #FromFilmSchool #PrairieCreatives

🎬 Short Film Project at BELS! At my school, our prep-year students are actively working on a Short Film Project as part of our commitment to fostering global citizenship. 💡 Project Overview: Theme: Global Citizenship Structure: Students are working in groups to create 16 original short films from start to finish. Objective: To help students internalize the concept of being global citizens, not only in theory but also in practice. Throughout this project, we aim to: Develop students' critical thinking and collaboration skills. Enhance creativity and storytelling abilities through scriptwriting and filmmaking. Embed the values of global citizenship within both the curriculum and extracurricular activities. 📜 To guide them through the process, I’ve designed an 8-week plan for writing short film scripts, which I’m happy to share with you. Hey Students and Future Filmmakers! I've been hearing some concerns about inexperienced teachers in Film Production and related studies in colleges. If you're a student, it's important to make sure you're getting the best education possible from qualified instructors. Here are a few tips to help you out: Ask Questions: Don’t be afraid to ask your lecturer about their background, industry experience, and qualifications. A good lecturer will be open about their credentials and experience. Observe Their Teaching Style: Take note of how your classes are conducted. A mix of theory and practical application is key in film studies. If something feels off, trust your instincts. Chat with Your Peers: Talk to your classmates about their experiences. Sometimes, getting a different perspective can highlight issues you might have missed. Use School Resources: If you have serious concerns, reach out to your school’s academic office or student services. There’s usually a formal process to provide feedback or file a complaint about a lecturer. Stay Proactive: Remember, your education is in your hands too. Supplement your classes with self-study and stay updated with industry trends. Teaching is a passion, and it needs to be done right. If you feel your education is being compromised, speak up! A New Milestone 🎬 I recently had the opportunity to edit a short film, and it was truly an amazing experience. Seeing the story come to life through the process of editing taught me so much about the art of storytelling. I'm grateful for this learning journey and the chance to contribute to something meaningful. 💡 Here's what I've learnt in this project from facing the problems to fixing them. 1. Stay Organized: Name and arrange your files properly—it saves so much time. 2. Master the Basics: Learn essential shortcuts to streamline your process. 3. Focus on Storytelling: Every cut and transition should add to the narrative. 4. Enhance with Color: Use Lumetri Color to match the mood of the film. 5. Balance the Audio: Pay attention to sound—it’s half the experience! Thanks to the Director of this film Anoushka Jain who trusted me with with the editing part, really grateful for this opportunity. I’m excited to share that I recently completed my client project for the Northampton Film Festival as part of my university coursework—and received a score of 65/100! While there’s always room to grow, I’m proud of this achievement and the incredible journey that led to it. This project wasn’t just an academic assignment; it was a deep dive into industry research, competitor analysis, and crafting actionable recommendations for a real-world client. From sleepless nights drafting the report to hours spent refining presentation slides, this experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me so much. Developing a clear strategy to increase awareness and engagement for the festival, Analyzing competitors and understanding the evolution of film festivals, and Creating practical recommendations, many of which the client found valuable for implementation. But the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Balancing this project with coursework and personal responsibilities was tough, and there were moments when I doubted myself. Revising drafts, answering critical questions during the presentation, and addressing the client’s feedback required resilience and adaptability. And let’s not forget the moments of tension when things didn’t go as planned! Through it all, I learned that growth happens when you embrace discomfort and push forward, even when things get overwhelming. I’m grateful for the feedback from my professors, the encouragement from peers, and the opportunity to work on such a meaningful project. To everyone navigating similar challenges—keep going!
