One of my favorite parts of this conversation with Jim Clark, my friend, mentor, and a volunteer powerhouse with the Southern Maine Agency On Aging, are his insights about inviting volunteer perspectives, ideas, and suggestions, and how to handle feedback with grace and appreciation when an idea can't be implemented. A great conversation full of thoughtful reflections from the perspective of an experienced leadership volunteer. I hope you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I did! https://lnkd.in/eqYDZKzv

Meet Yohana Coñuecar Llancapani! She is the co-coordinator of the Network of Native Women for the Defense of the Sea. Learn about what inspired the creation of Network of Native Women for the Defense of the Sea, how they practice collective leadership, and more. ⬇️ What inspired the creation of the Network? There is a deep need in Indigenous communities, which are mostly led by women, to create training skills in various subjects. From leadership, public speaking, political advocacy, technical concepts, empowerment, and a fundamental concept — strengthening self-esteem. The Network was born out of that need to articulate ourselves as Indigenous communities and as Native peoples to strengthen our capacities, which directly benefit the coastal marine spaces of Indigenous peoples and the territories. How is collective leadership practiced? Each of has a different leadership style. This has its challenges, but we all come together with a shared purpose and with our own unique and important skills. We are linear and work horizontally, which allows each opinion to generate an echo throughout the Network. Working collectively allows us to strengthen our knowledge. What is one word you would use to describe your hope for the future? Reciprocity.

It is with great interest and open minds that we're reading the 'Action Plan For Survivor Leadership in the Next Decade' developed by Survivor Alliance, after listening to an important conversation yesterday at the launch event. Survivor leadership is an aspiration that should be central to all work to address modern slavery and human trafficking, and research is no different. We are at the start of the journey from tokenistic inclusion to survivor leadership, with meaningful inclusion as part of the trip. But survivor leadership is the right aspiration not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it is essential for improving policies addressing modern slavery and informing them with real experience of people who have been through it. Read the plan on the Survivor Alliance website: https://lnkd.in/dPeBuVKr
