Hello LinkedIn Today I'll be sharing a grave mistake I made at the beginning of my design career and why you should avoid making the same. I've always been a creative person which naturally led me into the design field, I just wanted to replicate cool designs for fun and never really put so much. I slowly started to realize to differentiate between a design career and a hobby and I started focusing on how to earn from it. I applied for an internship (entry level position) with a company in the UK and I got the opportunity, but here was the catch, I was going to work pro bono for a few months after which I would decide if to continue with them or go work somewhere else, they were ready to give a reference letter for any company I was going to work with. Guess what? I rejected the offer, I was so money focused even when I barely had a solid footing in my design career, I was literally just starting out, that was an opportunity for me to work with a team for the first time, to rightly position myself to make meaningful connections exchange values and boost future opportunities. but I was too focused on the instant pay and I lost out on that opportunity. Does this mean you should always work for free? Absolutely not, this just means that if you get an early chance in your career that would propel you to the next level, please take it, even if it means working for free. When you start out in your career, your major focus should be to learn and make valuable connections as much ad possible. and yes, do some free work to gain trust and put yourself out there. To land a job in 2024, you can't do what everyone else is doing. Unfortunately this year I’m seeing a lot of: "I'm so fed up and changing careers because it's impossible to land a job!" "The market is so bad so I'm just going to wait until it gets better." During times of frustration and down economies, it's easy to take this route. But this is an emotional reaction, not a logical one. To be clear, I truly empathize with how stressful and frustrating this can be...because I’ve been there. Multiple times. But there are activities you can do to maximize your chances. For 2024, here are my updated strategies: ---------- 👉🏼 Before firing away applications to specific jobs, connect with recruiting companies, staffing firms, and job placement organizations: -Robert Half -Clear Point Consultants -Aquent -TEKsystems -Creative Circle -Mondo You need to have an army of recruiters bringing YOU job opportunities. ---------- 👉🏼 Don't shy away from internships, part-time contracts, temp work, and related gigs. You can gain valuable experience and build your skills in a real-world setting. You can focus on proving yourself by delivering amazing work while also networking with professionals in the industry to possibly land a full-time position. Not all internships are created equal but don’t immediately dismiss these chances. ---------- 👉🏼 Consider working for a startup. Yes, it is high-risk and you might be wearing multiple hats, but more than any other job you will learn at an extremely fast pace. Startups often allow for more creative freedom, and you may have the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks beyond your job description. Think about it...every company had to start small and you can be a part of that. 3 takeaways from redesigning my ENTIRE startup application and website in a few weeks. (1) Your interface must be intuitive: Users need to immediately understand how to use your application without confusion or a steep learning curve. The interface should feel familiar, leveraging common design patterns and elements they have already encountered in other apps. If users find your app difficult to navigate or understand, they are likely to leave and not return, making an intuitive design crucial for retention. (2) Take responsive design into account: Responsive design needs to be a primary consideration from the start, not an afterthought addressed with hardcoded values and media queries. When you begin designing in Figma or any design tool, ask questions like how the interface should respond to narrow or wide screens. By integrating responsiveness into the initial design phase, you ensure a seamless and adaptable user experience across all devices, enhancing accessibility and usability. (3) Talk to users. Then talk to them again. Then talk to them some more. Repeat. Your design decisions should be backed by real user data, not just assumptions. Regularly engaging with users through surveys, interviews, and user testing allows you to gather invaluable insights into how they interact with your interface. By observing users and conducting tests, you can identify their gripes and pain points, ensuring that your design addresses their actual needs and preferences, ultimately creating a more effective and user-friendly application. Hey everyone, I have a question for the IT INDUSTRY (just a 1 minute read 😊) I'm a recent graduate (April 2024) with a design degree from a well reputed design college. This is my story, and it's probably a familiar one to many new grads. Like many freshers, I haven't had a campus placement due to the current market. (Quite understandable, I mean, who’s to blame right?) For the past 4 months, I've been applying relentlessly across platforms – big MNCs, startups, design studios – you name it! My resume boasts a strong foundation: * 1+ year of industry experience through UI/UX internships (one at a top product MNC, another in service design)- before graduating * Multiple relevant certifications. * A hunger to learn and contribute. Here's the frustrating part. I get calls from various companies – large MNCs, some startups, design studio… all sorts – excited about my profile. But then things take a turn:↪️ 🔸Scenario 1: Exploited and Ghosted Companies call, impressed by my profile, only to ask irrelevant questions and offer 2-month, low-budget “conversion post internship roles” when I’ve clearly applied for a full time opportunity (I’m speaking of 10-15k p/m) Like? Seriously? The design courses we pursue are no less than 25+ lakhs - keep in mind, that these internships aren’t offering any real value. Disappointed,nevertheless, I pursue, after clearing multiple technical rounds and stolen ideas, they ghost me or claim the position is redundant. 🤐 🔷Scenario 2: Internship vs. Real Experience? Some companies, after seeing my internship experience, ask, "So you don't have real full-time experience?" This raises a big question: ▪️How can a recent grad have “full time” experience? ▪️Why isn't internship experience, often as demanding as full-time work, considered relevant and valuable? ▪️Don't internships provide industry exposure, hone skills, and demonstrate work ethic just like full-time jobs? ▪️Why do colleges push for “industry exposure/ internships/ apprenticeships” when the so called “industry exposure” offers no real value in the real industry 🟥 The Catch-22 of "Fresher" Positions They scream "Fresher!" in the title, then bury a "Minimum 2+ years experience" requirement at the bottom. HOW CAN FRESHERS GAIN THE EXPERIENCE IF COMPANIES ARENT WILLING TO OFFER THAT “EXPERIENCE”? It's a vicious cycle – "Need experience for a job, need a job for experience." So my Real question to the Industry is, WHAT DOES THE INDUSTRY WANT? If not for the degree, certifications, the extra curricular achievements, the hunger to learn, and the potential we bring… 🔴WHAT DOES THE INDUSTRY WANT?🔴 My genuine question- What makes us freshers, WORTHY enough?

The #1 reason you haven't landed your dream job yet 👇 Two weeks ago, I worked on a client's CV. She was a product designer looking for a remote or hybrid role with a tech company. After working on her CV, she was very impressed. She wanted me to help her craft a cover letter too. Then, I asked her to share a sample of one of the jobs she was interested in applying to. She shared with me a role that required 5+ years experience as a design manager. She had only 18 months experience as a product designer and not as a design manager. I asked her not to waste her time applying for that role since she didn't have the prerequisite skills and experience. She agreed. Then, it dawned on me - The number 1 reason you're applying to tons of roles and not hearing back is because you're applying to the wrong jobs. Before you apply for any job, make sure you read the job description very very well. You don't need to have 100% of the skills required nor do you need to have all the number of years of experience mentioned. But … Don't apply for roles that are completely off your alley! If you have 0-1 year experience, you might be looking for internship opportunities. If you have 1-3 years experience, you might be looking for entry level roles. If you have 3-10 years of experience, you might be looking for mid-level roles. If you have 10+ years of experience, you might be looking for senior level roles. You can't compare the skills and experience of a marketing executive to that of a Chief Marketing Officer. Save yourself the time and heartbreak! Tips for juniors, interns, or anyone who aspires to work in design/tech/comms. 👉🏼 Please send the email yourself. I’ve sadly written an email like this more times than I would like to: “Unfortunately, we can’t assist with this expression of interest. If your son would like to send me an email himself and share what interests him about working in technology or design, I’d be delighted to meet with him.” We get many requests for mentoring, internships, or work opportunities. And I make the time to respond to every one of them, even when it takes me away from other things that matter. I’ll take people out for a coffee if I can and ask questions about what they are up to. Some people might get a gig through these introductions. Others might get access to my network. I’ll always do my best to offer something useful. But if it is someone else who writes the email for you then I won’t be buying the coffee or opening my contact book, even if I know your mother/university coordinator/BFF personally. While I'd welcome the introduction, I’ll need you to send that email request yourself. If you can code at 16 years old, or build an integrated app at 22, or change your career at 55 – that is truly remarkable! But trust me, your soft skills development will be the key to most of your future success and ultimately what will get you the foot in the door. Technology is a vehicle to enhance communications, not a means to avoid it. So please send me the email. You might get a job out of it, or at the very least a conversation over a coffee that could lead to your next big thing.

While adding new talents to our ongoing tech projects today, I was shocked to see that several designers and developers who sent in mails requesting to participate in these project do not attach a link to a design template they have personally worked on. It doesn't have to be something you've done for a client. Part of having an entrepreneurial mindset means seeing yourself as your first client. It shouldn't be a bother to work on a project for yourself first. All I saw in the mail were CVs, the worst part, some forget to add CVs and end up writing just three lines as a mail intended for the Hiring Manager to read and offer them the opportunity. If no one holds the project important, you should be a bit certain the manager would. Three lines means you're communicating to the manager that the project is not important enough to get 5 minutes of your time for a well crafted mail seeking for an opportunity. Even for an internship placement, so much honour comes into play in how you communicate yourself to be fit for the opportunity. I believe many people still think internship is "just" a role, It's only a matter of a few years for you to discover how important a corporate facet it is in defining your career. By then, I'm sure we will grow comfortable being asked to pay a token for what we currently take with levity. I landed my first internship at a Fortune 100 with NO prior work experience. Everyone has to start somewhere, but what the #&%@ do you put on a resume when you have no work experience? 😂 Here's what I did & how you can replicate it ⬇️ Getting the first internship [or first job] is, in my opinion, one of the hardest you'll ever do in your career. It's a perpetual "chicken before the egg" problem ~ how do you get experience if everyone requires prior experience? The reality that no one talks about is that you can't apply to a role with a blank/empty resume, so you have to get *some* form of experience. This is the step that people often skip over: resume *building*. Here are three areas you can build your resume in, all of which I have done: 🛠️ Project experience -- projects are the EASIEST way to gain experience since you don't need anyone's permission, approval, or supervision to do it. Here are some example projects for different career paths ~ mobile & web apps (software engineering), investment memo or thesis (venture capital), product prototype/design, and strategy (product management). 🛠️ Competition experience -- want to test your abilities under pressure? And potentially win awards & cash prizes? Enter competitions! I won $12K+ from hackathons (SWE/PM), engineering pitch competitions (ENGR/Biz), startup pitch competitions (PM/Biz) and case competitions (Consulting). 🛠️ Work *Lite* experience -- fellowships, externships, micro-internships, etc. Basically, any form of "relevant" experience. These types of opportunities typically have less competition, can be slightly easier to attain, and don't have the same type of requirements/requisites as internships and full-time roles. You have to start somewhere; not only will these experiences fill your resume, but they'll also give you more confidence in the job search! Once you've built your resume, write it like a pro using these guidelines: ✅ Use the Google XYZ method ~ this is like the golden rule for resumes, and it goes, "Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]." ✅ Use your resume to TELL A STORY ~ use descriptive adjectives, strong verbs, and consistent bullet points to create a cohesive story that makes you look like THE perfect candidate for the job. ✅ Use an ATS-friendly format ~ this isn't too difficult, but it's a HUGE stumbling block for applicants.
