78% of STEM students can't name a notable woman in tech. This isn't surprising, given that women hold less than 5% of tech leadership roles. Representation, visibility, and the opportunity to mirror or feel inspired by a remarkable woman in tech is so rare it is nearly non-existent. As an ambitious woman looking to build a successful tech career, self-advocacy is key! I believe in: being our own champion. 🏆 If there is one thing I have learned from my experience of being a woman leader in tech, it is that nobody can champion your cause quite like you can. Here are six things I do when it comes to being my own champion: 🟠 Celebrate my successes: I make a point to pause and appreciate my accomplishments, big or small, as they occur. 🟠 Keeping a record of my accomplishments: This simple step is equivalent to having built-in "social proof" of my capabilities. Plus, it helps me recognize my own value and worth (and deal with imposter syndrome!). 🟠 Networking strategically: A strong network can open so many doors, from learning to career growth opportunities. Whether through social media, industry events, or other networking opportunities, I prioritize connecting with the right people and letting them know about my successes and goals. 🟠 Speaking up: Today, I spend a large amount of time building up my visibility (through social media, podcast guest appearances, talks/keynotes, and award ceremonies). I don't do it solely to promote the wonderful company I serve; I do so to take up the space I wish I had done earlier in my life, long before I had reached the C-suite. 🟠 Taking risks: Learning to be comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone helped me take risks, be bold when needed, and not be hard on myself if things don't always go as planned. 🟠 Staying positive: A little positivity can go a long way in helping you become your own champion! When faced with adversity, I use it as a lesson instead of letting it get me down. 🚀 Here's some concerning statistics: Degree Gap: Women account for only 18% of new computer science degrees, with Black and Hispanic women representing just 6% of degrees (Women in Tech Network). Promotion Gap: In tech, only 52 women are promoted to manager for every 100 men (McKinsey, Accenture). Retention Gap: Only 38% of women who majored in computer science are working in the field compared to 53% of men. This "leaky pipeline" phenomenon makes it difficult to retain women in STEM jobs (National Science Foundation). Work-Life Balance Gap: Women often leave jobs due to inflexible working hours and negative work-life balance. 97% fear asking for flexibility will impact promotion chances (Deloitte).🚀 On April 6, 2024, our company, Morgan Stanley sponsored Google’s Womes Techmakers event, hosted at the Service Now offices in Montreal's trendy Mile-End area. March is Women’s History Month, and as a woman CEO at a fast-growing EdTech company, I’ve been thinking a lot about what the landscape in tech looks like for us.   Right now, about 10% of Fortune 500 companies are helmed by female CEOs. In the tech industry, around 30% of all leadership roles are held by women, but that number has stayed flat in recent years. To date, none of the Big 5 tech companies (Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft) have ever had a woman CEO.   Many of us are familiar with female leaders such as Sheryl Sandberg, formerly of Meta or Ursula Burns, who was the first Black woman to lead Xerox, a Fortune 500 company. But women have been leading in tech since Ada Loveless started writing programs for Charles Babbage’s “Analytical Engine” in the 1840s.   So much of what those women who blasted through glass ceilings accomplished, and so much of what we take for granted today, is built on a foundation of other women’s contributions.   Beyond Loveless, we all – men and women alike – owe a huge debt to women like Grace Hopper, whose work on programming languages for the U.S. Navy is still used today. And the Black "super mathematicians" like Katherine Goble, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan, who performed calculations for the U.S. space program before what we refer to as computers were a thing. Check out their incredible story adapted into the movie “Hidden Figures” if you haven’t already!   And yet, data from McKinsey and LeanIn.org show that women are now leaving tech leadership roles at higher rates than before.   So, while we celebrate trailblazers like the women mentioned here and appreciate how far we’ve come, I’m also thinking about what else we do to help more women thrive in leadership positions in the tech industry.   Some of what we’re doing at CeriFi – remote work, flexible PTO, paid parental leave – is a good start. But I believe the tech industry as a whole must do more, and Women’s History Month is a great time to push for even more positive change.   I’d love to hear your own thoughts on moving the needle for women in tech.   #WomensHistoryMonth
