Did you know that therapists: Volunteer their time and have UNPAID internships? This is on top of paying for their education, attending their classes and still having to pay for their everyday life? It’s common to average 80+ hours of work while managing stress and retaining information. Bills don’t stop while we were or are training. Some are fortunate to have financial support from family or partners. Most are not. Then we graduate, we are in debt up to our eye balls and don’t get paid enough to pay off our student loans. I would love to run a study asking how many therapists are still paying off their loans. I know I am. #studentloans #studenloandebt #therapistsoflinkedin

This is my exact situation as a future LMHC going into internship next semester, as I am self-supporting and accepted an unpaid internship placement in a field I am passionate about pursuing. This is entirely accurate. Thank you for bringing attention to this and giving voice to it! I feel seen. 😊

Between undergrad and grad school, I am almost $150k in debt from student loans. I got my master’s degree in 2015 and received my license in 2019.

And therapists often have associate licenses that are not accepted by all payers.

I am in this exact spot.. graduated in 2019.. still waiting for the state to approve my hours and I am 150k in debt.. I would like to add that our yearly licensing fees, continue education, a need learning modalities adds up so fast.

"What is it like being a therapist?" It is rewarding and hard. It means allocating your resources (i.e., physical, emotional, mental) even on your hardest days. It means doing the work yourself and evolving alongside your patients and their loved ones. It means knowing when to shift with. It means you see the value in stepping back so people step up. It means you value education as a constant, moving being. It means observation of bias and upbringing. It means you learn and re-learn how to communicate. It means mutual impact. It means loss. It means you learn how to sit with things. It means the art of a human being. It means the art of a human mind. It means showing up. It means saying things with thoughtfulness. It means knowing when to say nothing. It means we model behavior. It means we are strong AND tired. It means the beauty of showing up. It means the beauty of coming back. It means safety. It means ethics. It means it is an honor to sit with people in their seasons. It means so much more than words. Yet as therapists: We have seen space and words help change lives. Observe the reality of a person. Sit with the reality of a person. How they act. What they say. Their patterns of behavior. Observe the reality of a situation. Sit with the reality of a situation. How situations are happening. How they've played out. The patterns of situations. Accountability can come in many forms. In the workplace, accepting and responding in the reality helps build accountable spaces. #Reality

PSA 🗣️ PLEASE STOP ASKING PEOPLE TO WORK FOR FREE! I know I’m not alone in receiving such requests. Here’s just a snapshot of the emails (summarised) I’ve had this year. ⛔️ We’d love you to chair a Next Gen roundtable in Birmingham… unfortunately, we don’t have any budget to pay you. ⛔️ We love your work but can’t pay you. However, there will be lots of big companies in the audience, so this is a great promotional opportunity for you. And my favourite… 😂 ⛔️ We don’t pay speakers, but we’d be happy to make a £250 contribution to a charity of your choice. Respectfully, none of the above are paying me. I offer many services as part of the work I do, one of them being speaking and hosting. I charge for these because I have mastered my art over several years. I spend time thinking about and planning what I’m going to say, how I’ll deliver it and what other motions need to be in place to support a panel event. ALL OF THIS TAKES TIME AND EXPERTISE. I will deliver 110% when I am paid because the stakes are higher. When you refuse to pay, you are: 1️⃣ Disrespecting my art, skills and knowledge in this space. 2️⃣ Devaluing the very purpose of what you’re trying to achieve. How can you hold a DEI event and not pay speakers fairly?! Surely you see the irony. 3️⃣ Undermining the whole profession and sending a message that it’s OK to work for free. Unless it’s Pro Bono work, I will turn down such requests. I’m not losing anything because I was never gaining anything. I have enough confidence and belief in myself and my abilities to call this out. And I am grateful that most requests I receive do make it clear they will be paying me. But for those who need a little help in calling this out, feel free to use the below email I sent back in response to the charity donation 🙄. Thank you for reading my Ted talk 🙏🏽. I am a very proud vendor for Madison’s disability pride festival. Having disabilities is also about advocacy and showing people they have preconceived notions and assumptions what we look like and/or are capable of. We are capABLE, we are powerful! I’m a woman-owned, disabled-owned small business. THIS SATURDAY AT WARNER PARK! I’ll be doing crystal sales, $10 card pulls and custom intuitive bracelets. 15 minute slots for each service from 12 pm - 5 pm. You’ll get to meet my family, too, which is a bonus! Amazing vendors!
