Imagine if someone plucked you from your home, separated you from your family and familiar surroundings, and placed you in an unfamiliar place. It would be disorienting, frightening, and deeply unsettling. Street puppies experience a similar disorientation and distress when they are relocated without proper consideration when their family is around. But, Rescuing an abandoned / lost dog is essential so what do you do when you see one? 🍀Firstly, look for the siblings and mother around. 🍀Contact Local Animal Shelters: Many organizations are dedicated to rescuing and caring for street animals. Reach out to them for guidance and assistance. 🍀Provide Food and Water: If you encounter a hungry pup, offering a small meal and fresh water can make a world of difference in their day. 🍀Spreading Awareness: Share their stories and advocate for their welfare on social media or in your community. Also, It's essential to educate kids about the importance of letting puppies be with their families. We can enjoy some playtime with them and give them lots of love, but then we should let them go back to their families. It's the right thing to do because it keeps them safe and happy, just like being with your family keeps you safe and happy. So, the next time you encounter a street puppy with family, remember that they are not toys to be moved around at will. They are sentient beings with emotions and needs, and it's our responsibility to treat them with kindness, respect, and understanding. It’s no secret that animal shelters across the country are in crisis. Nationally, shelters are in their third year of having too many animals and not enough adoptions — especially for dogs. The current trend shows dog adoptions down 1.2% from 2022 numbers, even after shelter intake January-September 2023 saw a 2.5% increase in dog intake. Research shows that pets bring great benefits to our lives. But across the world, millions of companion animals are living on the street or waiting in shelters. To help bring data and insight to the issue of pet homelessness, we recently launched the State of Pet Homelessness Project — the largest ever study into the scale and causes of pet homelessness — alongside leading animal welfare experts.   Our Global President of Mars Petcare Loic Moutault talked to the team at Economist Impact about what needs to be done to ensure more pets get the care and love they deserve, sharing data and insight from the study: “What we are talking about [at Mars] is better life outcomes: one pet adopted, one pet reunited with an owner, one pet given preventative care. In Blu’s case , his family was evicted, and after 4 years together with Blu, they had no choice but to surrender him. However, that’s not everyone’s story. Many people surrender their pets because the animal got too old and they don’t want to take care of them anymore, because the dog exhibited a behavior their humans didn’t like, and their people decided they don’t want to work on it. In most cases such behaviors show up because of human error, but it’s the dog that gets the short end of the stick. Some people have no choice but to bring their dog to the shelter, others simply abandon these beautiful, loyal beings who don’t understand why their people left them behind. Whatever the story may be, this is what an owner surrender looks like 💔 He’s shaking , and urinates when someone walks into his kennel because he is so afraid. His life changed quickly, and he doesn’t understand why. The shelter is a scary place. We are doing our best to make him feel safe and loved, because he is. How can anyone who has ever loved an animal owner surrender? The confusion of why their owner left them behind? The noise of the kennel makes them shutdown. The sadness and depression, not knowing what happened to make their owner do this? Not knowing who will love, feed, care for them. The would much rather be with you! Even if you time is limited. Even if they wait in the house for you all day. They want YOU Before you surrender, look at the options: Find someone who's dog need a companion May be there is an older person or a disabled person who needs a daytime friend. Maybe someone can walk your dog for you Doggie Daycare? PLEASE BEFORE YOU SURRENDER - imagine how you would feel if your family left you in that cell, by yourself, and with little hope and little interaction FIND A,WAY TO KEEP YOUR ANIMAL (dog, cat, bunny, goat,etc)

What does National Pitbull Awareness Day mean to you? For me, it’s a day and even a whole month to recognize a breed that is so misunderstood and discriminated against. Society blames the breed rather than the humans that are exploiting, overbreeding, and mistreating this breed. The pitbull and other bully breeds need to have more responsible dog parents (all breeds do but especially these pups). BSL needs to be abolished everywhere and focus more on the humans behind the leash. Oh yea, leash your dogs too. 😁 You don’t need to have a pitbull to help educate yourself or others. Here’s some ways to help showcase how pawsome this breed is: 1. Educate yourself by learning more about pitbulls. You can do this by getting involved with your community at local animal shelters, dog rescues, and public dog events. 2. Don’t fall trap to the media and people who portray pitbulls as baby killers, inherently dangerous, or a breed who deserves to die just because of their breed. 3. Be a responsible dog parent especially if you have a pitbull. They already have a target on them so there’s no need to further perpetuate the negative stigma. Leash your dog. Train your dog. Advocate for your dog always. 4. Do NOT say “It’s all in how you raise them!” There are so many pitbulls who come from very traumatic experiences who are able to be rehabilitated and/or who aren’t aggressive. This statement insinuates that dogs from traumatic backgrounds are broken, dangerous, and aren’t worthy of a having a loving home. I want to give a special shoutout to Philly Bully Team even though they aren’t local to Omaha, NE. Their focus is on pitbulls and bully breeds and have saved so many dogs from heartbreaking situations. They do a great job with educational posts, being transparent (which a lot of rescues/shelters don’t do), and they do so much for the dogs they rescue. Not every dog can be saved or rehabilitated but death should never be the default just because of a dog’s breed.
