Thirty years. 🎈 Crazy, right? Maybe it doesn’t seem that wild to you—plenty of brands have existed for more than a few decades—but to us, this is special. Not sure if you’ve noticed, but it’s not easy for a media company to hang around these days. So far, we’ve done it. And to be honest, we’re damn proud of it, so we’re going to celebrate TF out of it this year. That celebration kicks off with this issue. We devoted the majority of our new issue to recognizing a group of players who helped SLAM become what it is today. It’s technically not 30 individual players, but rather 30 entries, with a few entries including people who needed to be acknowledged together (Q-Rich and D-Miles; the Ball Brothers; you get it). And then we compiled 30 young players we think have a chance to be on the next version of this list, because we always look forward while we celebrate the past. Speaking of that celebration, we’ve got a lot more coming this year. We don’t want to spoil anything, but let’s just say it includes IRL events, sneaker collabs, apparel collabs, digital content, an amazing new print product and more. Any company, or organisation can benefit from these, because at their root it's all about communicating who you are and what you do. Entertainment, is often seen as a less necessary service, when a company considers imbedding it's value to it's potential customers minds, but this is not new... There's a reason why Louis Vuitton spent lots of money to have Pharrell & Jay-Z perform for their "2024 fashion show" FEAR NOT...You don't need to splash out millions and have A-listers wearing your brand, to get any value from employing entertainment services. Loving the new Levi Strauss & Co. partnership with Beyoncé and the remake of the iconic advert from 1985 titled "Laundrette". I love how they've taken something so iconic and realigned it to meet today's target audience and also it took be back to studying for my GSCEs!! A lot of people in our industry will look at this and go: "Wow, a great TV ad", "Brilliant creative idea", "This can win so many awards", "They'll increase sales for sure" etc. ....Sadly, this narrow view does not cut it the world today. Because the true value behind a polished and well produced film is a story that matters. A story that the brand feels the need to tell, and the people feel the need to hear. A story that's a statement – whether written as a sentence or told as a two minute film. The impact it has is the same. And for a few of us, that is the main reason why after all these years in this industry, we still love doing what we do. This is what "branding" is really about.
