Interesting article in BROADCAST (echoed by Channel 4 today) about the death of 'mid-range' TV - the UK programming landscape is polarising to either big budget, noisy primetime shows or cheap volume plays. I'm not entirely sure of the definition of 'mid-range', but the US/Streamer strategy of slick, big budget shows with established IP doesn't always work... look at ACOLYTE and RINGS OF POWER. On the flip side, some 'mid-range' UK shows were huge successes and the incubators of the biggest talent in the world - stars like Ricky Gervais, Sacha Baron Cohen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Does the world not see us as a bit midrange, quaint and quirky? Aren't we tweed-clad sleuths and Time Lords, Mr Bean and waffling aristocrats? Rather than aspiring for slick blockbusters maybe we should celebrate our idiosyncrasies and have the space to make content that's a bit weird and a bit mid level - because they might turn into our biggest hits?
