In the last 24 hours, 3 figures associated with Google have received Nobel Prizes for their contributions to science: Demis Hassabis & John Jumper, both from Google DeepMind, won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on AlphaFold, an AI system that predicts the 3D structure of proteins from amino acid sequences. Their achievement has significantly advanced biology by making protein structure prediction much faster and more accurate, helping researchers globally in fields such as drug discovery and enzyme design. Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in machine learning and artificial intelligence, won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics along with John Hopfield. They were honored for their foundational work in machine learning, particularly contributions that laid the groundwork for the development of AI systems used today. These laureates have been recognized for pushing the boundaries of AI and science, improving our understanding of biology and the capabilities of technology to transform research and innovation.
