A first-of-its-kind program led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Smart Cities Mission, the #NurturingNeighbourhoodsChallenge, (NNC) supported by the Van Leer Foundation with WRI India as the technical partner, successfully enabled 10 Indian cities to embed the young-children-and-caregiver-friendly approach in urban development. By identifying seven key strategies towards building capacities, partnerships, institutionalization, seeking funding, implementing solutions, and informing policy level changes, the Challenge has enabled 10 cities to setup systems and processes to sustain this approach in the long-term. These strategies can further help other cities to create nurturing environments for young children and their caregivers. In a world dominated by digital technologies, the essence of traditional teaching methods often gets overshadowed. However, amidst this digital revolution, there are educators like Mr. Hemant Patel, whose unique approach to teaching history stands as a shining example of the invaluable role of traditional methods in education. Mr. Patel, a dedicated teacher at a primary school in Kelia village, located in the Vansda taluka of Gujarat, has been revolutionizing the way history is taught to students. Instead of relying solely on textbooks and digital resources, he has taken a hands-on approach by curating a remarkable collection of coins dating back to as early as 500 BCE. With a collection spanning over 362 rare coins from India and abroad, Mr. Patel has transformed history lessons into engaging experiences for his students. By showcasing these ancient artifacts, he not only brings history to life but also provides students with a tangible connection to the past. Through his innovative teaching methods, Mr. Patel simplifies complex historical concepts, making them accessible and relatable to his students. By using coins as teaching aids, he encourages students to explore the socio-cultural context of different time periods and gain a deeper understanding of our rich heritage. Beyond textbooks and lectures, Mr. Patel's approach fosters curiosity and critical thinking among students. By immersing themselves in the study of coins, students not only learn about historical events but also develop a holistic understanding of our collective history. What is WSF? You might ask this! Lemme answer this question for you.... The Wesean Student Federation (WSF) is an organization focused on fostering education, cultural unity, and environmental conservation among students in the Wesea region. As the Vice President of the High school forum of WSF, I've had the honour of contributing to several significant initiatives that align with our mission of educational enrichment and community engagement. One of our major projects is the establishment of a library in Guwahati, which aims to provide students with access to a wide range of educational resources. This initiative is designed to support academic growth and lifelong learning for students in the region. Our vision is to make this library a hub for knowledge and community activities, promoting literacy and education at all levels. In addition to the library, I am working on developing an AI-driven platform that will connect students across the Wesea region- this is with the help of the collegiate students in WSF. This platform will offer personalized learning experiences, provide access to educational materials, and facilitate communication among students and educators. By leveraging artificial intelligence, we aim to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment that reaches every student, regardless of their location. Our commitment to environmental conservation is another cornerstone of our activities. We actively participate in wildlife conservation efforts, understanding the crucial role that biodiversity plays in our ecosystem. Our conservation projects are designed to raise awareness and engage students in preserving the natural heritage of our region. On a personal note, I am proud to have been involved in the launch of "The Wesean," our bi-monthly magazine. This publication serves as a platform for students to express their ideas, share their achievements, and stay informed about the latest developments within WSF and beyond. We know all about the world but have experienced nothing of it: "Most mainstream schools follow a centralised education curriculum. A committee in Delhi sits and decides what children across a diverse landscape like India learn in their classrooms - from Tamil Nadu, to Rajasthan, from Assam to Ladakh. The result of such an educational structure driven by the interests of the free market, and large corporate employers, is one which psychologist Allen Kanner reveals - that children by the age of 10 can recognise over 300 brands and logos. But not trees, rivers, insects, and aspects of the biosphere, land and people we actually have a relationship with. These are structurally not part of conversations, our imagination or the predominant experiences of a city-school going child. Each one brings its own unique approach to education, but this diversity also leads to a variety of challenges—from curriculum variations to differing assessment methods. 🔍 Spotlight on Divergence: The latest report by #PARAKH on #EquivalenceOfBoards uncovers the extent of these divergences, highlighting how students across the country are learning the same subjects at different paces, with varying levels of depth. Imagine two students in different states studying the same subject—one’s knee-deep in algebra, while the other’s still dipping their toes! This report encapsulates insights regarding the current level of equivalence in assessment, curriculum, administration, infrastructure, and inclusiveness, based on data voluntarily reported by different boards of school education. These insights were gathered using tools developed by PARAKH—namely the Equivalence Questionnaire and Question Paper Analysis Template. The Bigger Picture: Despite these differences, we’re all working towards a shared goal—a cohesive education system where every student has equal access to quality learning. The Indian school education system faces significant challenges, including disparities in access and quality, especially in rural and marginalized communities. Many schools struggle with inadequate infrastructure, outdated curricula, and a lack of emphasis on critical thinking. The curriculum often fails to align with modern workforce needs, while overcrowded classrooms and high teacher-student ratios hinder effective learning. Additionally, the digital divide limits access to technology, and inclusive education for children with special needs remains underdeveloped.
