As we step into 2025, I want to wish all my family, friends, staff, connections, and customers a Happy New Year! 2024 has been nothing short of amazing for The Edinburgh Boiler Company. Mark Glasgow and I set bold goals to future proof our business and become leaders in the renewables sector. Through hard work and determination, backed by our incredible team, we not only achieved this but set the stage for much greater success. We also aimed high with a goal to win an H&V Award, putting ourselves up against the best in the UK. Walking away with the Contractor of the Year title wasn’t just a win, it was proof that big ambitions/goals accompanied by relentless effort can turn ambitions/goals into reality. As we move into 2025, our goals are even bigger, and here’s my message to to anyone in business, thinking of starting a business or even within your personal life: dream big, take action, and don’t settle for anything less than your best. Whatever you want to achieve this year, believe it’s possible. Write down your goals, create a plan, and go after them with everything you’ve got. When you win, the feeling is indescribable. And even if you stumble, the courage to start and try is worth more than doing nothing and standing still. Let 2025 be the year you go all in. Aim big, win big! Wishing you all happiness, and success in the year ahead.

Mingle, share ideas, and share intros to your connections for future collaborations …but let’s not forget it can be an opportunity for some much needed relaxation and a rare chance to unwind. In the motor trade, it’s early starts and late nights, we put our body on the line for our companies, constantly pursuing improvement, chasing deadlines and seemingly impossible targets, stressing a lot, and often sweating the small stuff- it’s easy to get caught up in it- EVERTHING is urgent- but sometimes we need to take a step back and a deep breath. It’s an incredibly fast paced industry that attracts winners, mastery is super important to them, people that naturally put that pressure on themselves to always perform and be the very best. It’s probably why it’s littered with ex pro athletes for example. I love this quote- it’s hung up in the office in my house. Hopefully it resonates, and makes an impression with some of you. Whether your at the awards or in the office- have a fabulous day!

What do pensions and pinot noir have in common? At WTW the M&A team is fortunate to be part of a broader team called IGS. Integrated Global Solutions. It means we work collaboratively as experts on the most complex problems all over the world. M&A, Global Benefits, Global Actuarial, Total Rewards, Wellbeing, DEI. You name it. And this month was no different. Earlier this month, we all came together around a series of fantastic client events in Chicago. And then on Friday, we came together for a leadership meeting. However, this meeting was different. There were no pre-reads and the agenda was a secret. (Yikes!) How was this going to go? Our brainstorm on what Imran Qureshi had in store for us over dinner (and drinks) the prior night led us to the inconclusive conclusion that we could be doing anything ranging from trust falls to a financial deep dive. So I wore my sneakers. And my suit. We gathered in the meeting room. And what we learned after several bites of bacon and fruit (in case we need sustenance for the ropes course), was that we were going to have three critical brainstorms. But the fourth and most complex brainstorm came at the end. Our Head of IGS Europe, Maud Mercier-Pain received a bottle of wine as a thank you for the fantastic work she'd done for several clients in the US. And now she needed to figure out how to get it from the US to France without checking her luggage. So we explored shipping it but as many of you will know this is practically impossible without spending a lot of money on import fees, shipping and taxes. So we pulled together. Sacrificed. And we came up with this solution. Problem solved. Yum. Whew team work😅. You’re welcome Maud. Perhaps next time, an escape room? “Jamie Oliver Knows My Name!” One of my proudest business achievements in 2024 was being recognised by Jamie Oliver and his panel of judges for the Jamie Oliver Food Hero Award. While I didn’t take home first place, I was shortlisted—and to me, that’s a win worth celebrating! As Jamie and his panel of experts said “Your work is truly brilliant and we loved reading all about it… you were just pipped to the post by another winner.” Running a business has taught me that it’s so important to pause and acknowledge the milestones, no matter how big or small. There are so many reasons that being involved with Awards ceremonies works, but why do we run them? For us it is simple, we want to celebrate the businesses in each of our cities (Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Exeter) - We are connectors in our cities and bring businesses together to build relationships with new/old/potential clients. That way the businesses we work with get awareness, exposure, new customers and new connections.
