This week, we mark one year since the launch of our global advocacy campaign, #HomeEquals, which seeks policy changes at all levels of government to increase access to adequate housing in informal settlements. We are thrilled with the incredible progress that has been made so far including: 45 policy or systems changes advocated for and successfully enacted at the local and national level in nine countries worldwide More than 3 million people living in informal settlements have gained improved access to adequate housing Over $63 million in government funds accessed for the development of adequate housing But our work is far from done. There are still 2.8 billion people worldwide lacking adequate housing, and nearly 1.1 billion people residing in informal settlements, with this number continuing to increase. We must continue to advance our efforts to change and accelerate policies to ensure a more equitable world where everyone has a safe and secure place to call home. Rather, it should be seen as the right to live somewhere in security, peace and dignity. The characteristics of the right to adequate housing are clarified mainly in the Committee’s general comments No. 4 (1991) on the right to adequate housing and No. 7 (1997) on forced evictions.1 • The right to adequate housing contains freedoms. Pursuant to the Regional Cooperation Act, Virginia has 21 planning district commissions (PDCs) which are voluntary associations of local governments intended to foster intergovernmental cooperation by bringing together local elected and appointed officials and involved citizens to discuss common needs and determine solutions to regional issues. Tracing its origins to 1961, the George Washington Regional Commission is the PDC established by the General Assembly for the region comprising the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford. The Commission is responsible for encouraging and facilitating local government cooperation in addressing, on a regional basis, problems of greater than local significance, and provides a broad array of services for the benefit of the residents of Planning District 16. Our current areas of focus include economic development, environmental services, housing & community health, transportation demand management, and rural and urban transportation planning. Reconciliation Week 💛❤🖤 THEME: ‘Now More Than Ever’, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for JUSTICE and the RIGHTS of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue. In Western Australia, a startling reality confronts us: despite comprising 3.3% of the state's population, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people represent a staggering 35% of those experiencing homelessness. This alarming statistic serves as a significant reminder of the deep-seated disparities our First Nation peoples endure. As we strive for reconciliation and seek to right the injustices of the past, it's abundantly clear that mere acknowledgement isn't enough. We must actively work towards closing this gap so that the same rights and opportunities are available to everyone regardless of who they are. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, we need to collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures. First Nations peoples are a priority group at Street Law Centre, and we will continue to provide them with a voice in the justice system and provide access to justice for them. #NRW2024
