Nice article that makes the case why MBSE is critical for managing complexity and risk of very complex projects, but I’d like to add some of my own thoughts. Model based systems engineering is incredibly misunderstood and, unfortunately, many who think they are practicing MBSE (and even SE) are actually not. I recall even having to convince folks not to put MBSE in a name and material and frankly I see so many tools and products that claim to do MBSE when in fact it is clear that is not what they do. The core of the problem, in my view, is that unless you have some formal exposure to Systems Engineering, you cannot really appreciate what it is and don’t know any better. It is perhaps understandable that when highly technical folks hear “model” and “systems” the brain naturally goes to numerical simulation and a bunch of components interacting. Of course digital engineering, simulation, and physical modeling all play an important part not only in systems engineering but also good practice in any complex engineering design, but practicing this is not sufficient nor equivalent to MBSE. So what is systems engineering? To put it perhaps too simply, it is the formalization of both the hard design and analysis as well as some of the softer project management and lifecycle process execution into an integrated and well planned (designed) process (i.e. system). So what about the model based part? Think about applying models and interaction techniques that you may already do on physical systems to that and additionally to project management, requirements capture, lifecycle analysis, etc. using formal techniques. Why is this important? Many systems are complex. If we think about the engineering we do, many of our plans and creations have lifetimes longer than a typical career and will integrate into systems that are developed and maintained by many thousands of people. MBSE enables planned execution and, when iteration or other change occurs, to properly propagate that information through the design, deployment, and lifecycle management of the system. But now I’m taking away from the article. Go read the paper by Todd B. Cutick, a true expert in the field. It really is a compelling case for the power of MBSE.
