Studying mechanical engineering at RWTH involves not only theoretical learning but also hands-on workshops. Our Simulation Laboratory for Alternative and Electrified Vehicle Propulsion Systems, led by Alexander Koss and Marvin Rüttermann over the last three weeks, is a perfect example of this. It may seem like a paradox, but mastering proper simulation requires both learning and practice, which can be achieved in our simulation lab. Together with students, the theory from the lecture "Alternative and Electrified Vehicle Propulsion Systems" was put into practice and a simulation model was brought to life. The students had to understand the calculation path from the driving cycle to the battery's energy requirements and then solve battery dimensioning tasks on the model. A new course was taught by Drs. Borji and me this Summer Session at the University of Houston's Mechanical Engineering Department at the Graduate Level. We had well over 20 graduate and undergraduate students take this course, and based on their responses, the course was very successful. This course integrated the concepts of Design of Experiments with Machine Learning in very novel ways to enhance Machine Learning Algorithms or improve Experimental Designs and its analysis. Ed Marotta & Rafik Borgi Here were the Learning objectives, This is an introductory course on Design of Experiments (DOE) and Machine Learning and its integration for undergraduate and graduate students in the major of mechanical engineering. In this course, students are expected to expand upon their fundamental knowledge of DOE, Statistics and its application, and machine learning concepts to develop an understanding of the principal concepts and methods of its application, and the integration of the two concepts. This course is divided into two (2) parts that provides a background in Design of Experiments with Machine Learning analysis. The class is held in a Hybrid model with online lecture and potentially Friday face-to-face lectures. •      Design of Experiments (DOE) •      Machine Learning (ML) The emphasis for each subsection is geared directly to engineering applications and data processing. This course is tied to an assigned analysis project which enforces the application of the fundamentals. Practicing engineers and graduate students will find it an indispensable source for interdisciplinary learning of DOE with Machine Learning.

A long-term trend also continued in Winter Semester 2022/23 in Germany: The development of numbers of first semester students in computer sciences and in mechanical engineering goes into opposite directions. Does this lead to severe shortages in labour force, or does it represent a changing labour market, caused by technological developments (or both)? I had the opportunity to offer the "Introduction to Systems Engineering" Course again in Fall 2023 as there was significant interest from Undergraduate students (115 registrations).. This course is also offered for M.Tech in Systems Engineering and as fractal to M.Tech in Computational Mechanics. One key addition this time is the PESTEL analysis as part of Systems Engineering Principles from INCOSE (See attached slides). The PESTEL analysis provides a framework to look at System interaction with other systems from Political/Economic/Social/Technology/Environment/Legal view point and the implications (positive & negative). This analysis can also be used to find new business opportunities and threat to existing. Student were given assignment on PESTEL analysis which involved : choosing a topic which has different systems interactions and report how they impact significantly now & in future (business opportunity or challenge).
