Deep in #Antarctica❄️, the #HalleyVIResearchStation🇬🇧is the headquarters of the British Antarctic Survey. The six comes from the fact that five other Halley Research Stations have fallen prey to Antarctica’s inhospitable environment. This is one of the few structures that wasn’t built on location. #Britain🇬🇧 prefabricated and tested them in #SouthAfrica before shipping them to Antarctica. Portability is vital because they set up Haley VI Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf, which is quickly moving towards the ocean. The British Antarctic Survey’s scientific research center Halley VI was designed to withstand temperatures of -50°C, to be self-sufficient for months on end and, should danger strike, to move locations quickly. The research conducted at Halley VI has had far-reaching impacts. The long-term research led to the discovery of a hole in the #Ozone layer in 1985. This significant finding has shaped global environmental policies and strategies for decades. The base has even been used to help the European Space Agency, by testing out what it’s like to live and work in a place that is very isolated. #AntarticSpecialOpsSAS🇬🇧

As has been well documented, #Arctic #seaice has steadily #declined in #extent and #thickness since the 1980s. Sea ice in the #SouthernHemisphere, however, has tended to behave differently to its Northern counterpart. As covered in the newly published #StatoftheOceans 2024 report, a collaboration between #Statista and the #GermanOceanFoundation: "Despite the rise in global #seasurfacetemperature, the #Antarctic was showing to be more resilient to such changes. Nonetheless, this pattern seems to have reached a #tippingpoint." As illustrated in this infographic, #seaicecover extent in Antarctica reported record low levels in 2023. Particularly in #winter, when the sea ice area is at its highest, #icecover drifted drastically away from the average. While a strong #ElNiño phenomenon in 2023 may have caused the abnormal reaction, "researchers are already arguing if this is a temporary effect or if we are at the beginning of a new regime for the #Southernicesheet." https://lnkd.in/gAVcsrXj

It was an absolute privilege and honour to contribute to this work with this leadership. The heartbreaking results captured in Antarctica should be a stark call to the world to implement meaningful action now to change the crash course humanity is currently on with the natural environment. The connection between plastic and climate is rarely highlighted, yet plastics will account for 15% of the total carbon budget over the next few decades. How do we grow the political and corporate will needed to make real impactful change in the face of those wanting to infinite economic growth? #oceangeographic, #ACE2023, #antarctica, #OceanLegacy #WorldOceanSummit, #economist, #OG, #powerinus, #2099powerinus
A preview version of our Antarctic movie "2099 Power in Us" premiered at the start of Sylvia A. Earle's keynote session at the World Ocean Summit - she kicked off her session by referencing a few talking points from our movie, especially on the state of the Antarctic we documented to the audience of over 1500 delegates This is an amazing outcome for our mission. She received a standing ovation for her session- and was told this was the first-ever at the World Ocean Summit. Icebergs are chunks of tightly compacted snow that originate from the Arctic and Antarctic areas. When they detach and enter the ocean, their expedition commences as they gently float and slowly dissolve due to the ocean's temperature over their voyage. Some of these immense icebergs can persist for up to six years until they finally melt in warmer oceanic surroundings. An astounding 90% of the iceberg is concealed beneath the water, representing vital freshwater reserves for our planet. #iceberg
