Starting from a mere concept for a tech demo mission for Almagest Space Corporation a few months ago, XDLINX Labs partnered with leading millimeter wave component suppliers to develop the space grade E-band payload. SPACEMAP, a South Korean space technology company led by Dr. Douglas Deok-Soo Kim, has developed transformative space collision prevention methods. In a landscape where satellites navigate increasingly crowded orbits, the risk of collisions becomes a pressing concern. Despite the complexities posed by the surge in space catalog size, SpaceMap tackles these challenges by providing innovative solutions for real-time conjunction assessment and near real-time collision avoidance. At the core of SpaceMap’s innovative solution lies the Voronoi diagram, renowned for its efficiency in spatiotemporal reasoning across both 2D and 3D spaces. The technology utilizes a dynamic Voronoi diagram, enabling real-time definition of neighborhoods for moving points, such as satellites. Investments in the company, including foundational support from Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) since 2016, has exceeded $10 million. This week at the UK Space Conference, I had the opportunity to meet with many members of the UK Space Agency and share ideas with industry peers and discuss Dragonfly Aerospace’s visions for helping to shape the future of space. It’s clear that as we become more and more dependent on space for the likes of Earth Observation and Communication, Space Situational Awareness (SSA) will be fundamental in helping us better understand space objects and their environment for safety and space traffic management (STM). 🛰 Satellite operators are expected to incorporate end-of-life de-orbit capabilities into their platforms and only effective SSA can ensure accurate STM of this requirement. 🛰 Current SSA is based on tracking objects in space, identifying them, establishing their orbits, and predicting future trajectories such that threats to existing operations. 🛰 Excellent SSA, which is only possible with affordable high-performance sensors and innovative algorithms, is going to save the burgeoning space industry from itself. Ultimately, with the predicted growth in launch efforts and LEO satellite constellations, the primary function of SSA is going to be real-time STM. By analysing potential collision scenarios, studying re-entry trajectories, and tracking spacecraft debris objects, we can ensure the safety of space operations for a more sustainable future that stretches far beyond the boundaries of our Earth.

International Defence & Space Workshop Since early 2000, due to new space initiative and CubeSat technologies, there has been a large increase in number of satellites developed and launched which led to a number of specialized small sat launch vehicle development and rideshare options on larger ones, such as transport mission of Falcon 9 of SpaceX, reducing launch cost and making space accessible to everyone. In parallel, many miniaturized systems are developed increasing capability and usage of small satellites particularly in remote sensing and communications. Due to fast development times and affordable cost, they have been produced in large numbers to form constellations reducing very much the temporal resolution as well as adding redundancy. Having spacecraft development, a possibility for everyone is brought up the issue of threat for existing large-scale expensive space assets thus needing a way to protect them. Space situational awareness (SSA) has become a major topic of research and system/sensor development towards protection of in orbit space capabilities. Likewise, Türkiye, based on recent developments and TUAs space program which gives importance to space studies and plan to increase its space capabilities in orbit through public and private organisations, should participates in these works extensively through international cooperation and prepare related regulatory conditions to attract investors and technology leaders. Therefore, a second meeting is being planned under the leadership of KÜPSAT A.S. and TUYAD entitled “CubesatVision Exclusive Defence Workshop”, which will be held on 15 May 2024 between 10:00-17:00 at Istanbul Bostancı Green Park Hotel, which will bring together international space companies, domestic defence industry companies and all relevant institutions of the public sector to discuss in depth the space situational awareness, space systems-security-space asset protection and its future under the main concept of defence. This workshop is first of its kind under the main title of “Defence & Space. We will be honored by the participation of your leading Institution/Company (as panelist, participant, sponsor, displayer) in satellite technologies to this event, where we will present the knowledge and experience of the sector stakeholders operating in the national and international arena on defence and communication security in space, which arouses great curiosity in our country and in the world, where we will increase the level of knowledge together towards new horizons. “In this day and age, space capabilities are the main element of the national and economic security for countries!”

🎉 Airbus Receives Mission Vigil for Space Weather Spacecraft 🚀🎉 Airbus has secured an exciting new project from the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop and construct Vigil, a satellite for space weather forecasting. Rogue Space Systems Corporation has secured a SBIR Phase II award from SpaceWERX, the U.S. Space Force's innovation arm, valued over $1M. The project aims to enhance Rogue's Contactless LAser Satellite Stethoscope (CLASS) for characterizing Resident-Space-Objects (RSOs) through remote identification and diagnostics. CLASS employs a laser vibrometer to measure spacecraft's electronic vibrations, enabling identification and anomaly detection via their 'acoustical signatures.' According to Rogue CEO Jon Beam, 'The ability to remotely detect and characterize space objects with their unique 'heartbeats' offers a wholly new opportunity to assist with diagnosis and repairs.' This breakthrough technology will enhance situational awareness for space traffic management and satellite monitoring. It also aligns with Rogue's roadmap towards building a fleet of Orbots™ for in-space logistics services, empowered by advanced characterization capabilities. China's Long March 6A Rocket Is Making a Mess In Low-Earth Orbit.: Longtime Slashdot reader schwit1 shares a report from Ars Technica: The upper stage from a Chinese rocket that launched a batch of Internet satellites Tuesday has broken apart in space, creating a debris field of at least 700 objects in one of the most heavily-trafficked zones in low-Earth orbit. US Space Command, which tracks objects in orbit with a network of radars and optical sensors, confirmed the rocket breakup Thursday. Space Command initially said the event created more than 300 pieces of trackable debris. The military's ground-based radars are capable of tracking objects larger than 10 centimeters (4 inches). Later Thursday, LeoLabs, a commercial space situational awareness company, said its radars detected at least 700 objects attributed to the Chinese rocket. The number of debris fragments could rise to more than 900, LeoLabs said. The culprit is the second stage of China's Long March 6A rocket, which lifted off Tuesday with the first batch of 18 satellites for a planned Chinese megaconstellation that could eventually number thousands of spacecraft. The Long March 6A's second stage apparently disintegrated after placing its payload of 18 satellites into a polar orbit. Space Command said in a statement it has "observed no immediate threats" and "continues to conduct routine conjunction assessments to support the safety and sustainability of the space domain." According to LeoLabs, radar data indicated the rocket broke apart at an altitude of 503 miles (810 kilometers) at approximately 4:10 pm EDT (20:10 UTC) on Tuesday, around 13-and-a-half hours after it lifted off from northern China. At this altitude, it will take decades or centuries for the wispy effect of aerodynamic drag to pull the debris back into the atmosphere. As the objects drift lower, their orbits will cross paths with SpaceX's Starlink Internet satellites, the International Space Station and other crew spacecraft, and thousands more pieces of orbital debris, putting commercial and government satellites at risk of collision. Evidence indicates that the PRC Test Spacecraft 3, launched on Dec 14, raised its orbit over Jan 5-6 by ~9 km. We're continuously monitoring this object using our radar network, especially our radars in the Southern Hemisphere. Here's why that matters. While we have 6 phased-array radar sites tracking objects in low Earth orbit, our radars in New Zealand and Australia in particular fill a critical Southern Hemisphere coverage gap. This is important for space domain awareness (SDA). As the traffic in LEO grows, so does the need for space safety and SDA, which requires comprehensive, continuous coverage of the space environment. In particular, we need to reduce the time elapsed between observations (i.e., the revisit rate) in order to study and monitor activities in space, from potential collisions and satellite maneuvers to proximity operations and anti-satellite weapon tests. This requires not only increasing the number of ground radars intended for space observation but also distributing them geographically. Notably, countries in the Indo-Pacific region are increasingly launching satellites for a variety of purposes. With a lack of coverage, non-cooperative launches and anomalous activities can go undetected for periods of time, potentially impacting space safety and security. That's why we built radars in New Zealand and Australia — to close the coverage gap and prevent operational surprise.
