The focus should shift from the physical location of employees to the fundamental question of how the organization, as a complex system, ensures stability and effectiveness. Whether staff members are working remotely or from an office, the crucial factor lies in the stability of the micro-systems within the organization. System science emphasizes that the health and functionality of the macro-system are directly influenced by the stability of its micro-components. Instead of fixating on the location of work, healthcare organizations should prioritize developing indicators and measures that assess the stability of these micro-systems, encompassing aspects such as communication, collaboration, and workflow efficiency. Measuring progress in a large healthcare organization necessitates a paradigm shift from traditional notions of remote versus on-site work towards a more holistic evaluation of system stability.
