🌟🔥 Safeguarding Berkeley and Oakland: Proactive Fuels Management Efforts in Tilden Regional Park 🔥🌲 The East Bay Regional Park District is making impactful strides to reduce wildfire risks and protect Tilden Regional Park while enhancing the ecological forest health. Here’s a look at the ongoing 2024 projects and upcoming projects planned for 2025: 1️⃣ Grizzly Peak Strategic Fuel Break (March-April 2024): - Clearing roadside brush, pruning overhanging branches, and removing hazardous trees across 5.52 acres along South Park Drive and Golf Course Drive. - Creating defensible space to protect critical areas. 2️⃣ South Park Dieback Removal Unit (June-August 2024): - Removing dead and drought-stressed pines and eucalyptus over 25.9 acres, reducing fire risks and improving forest health. - 104 burn piles created to properly manage excess fuels. - Funding support provided by Calfire Grants and District funds. 3️⃣ Dead Pine Removal Along Park Hills Drive: - A project focused on removing dead pine trees to ensure the safety of nearby communities and park visitors. Rebecca Murphy of our team at the Northern Virginia Regional Commission oversees our Clean Water Partners program. As such, Rebecca has put together a great deal of information to help protect the environment through the smart use of salt during the winter weather months. As winter sets in, homeowner associations (HOAs) and civic associations face the important task of ensuring residents' safety while maintaining property values and minimizing liability. A key part of winter maintenance involves managing snow and ice, but this doesn’t just mean clearing sidewalks and roads. It also requires a strategic approach to salt management—one that protects both people and the environment. HOAs and civic associations can take a number of proactive steps to manage salt use wisely and minimize its negative impact on the environment, infrastructure, and community health. To assist our HOAs, Civic Associations and residents, NVRC has published a number of maintenance best practices and tips to help reduce the amount of salt used. It only takes one teaspoon of salt to permanently pollute 5 gallons of water. Salt seeped into the environment can: - Raise sodium levels in our drinking water and increase treatment costs. - Harm fish, plants and other wildlife. - Corrode vehicles, roads, bridges and parking lots. 🌲 🔥 Wildfire mitigation is absolutely critical, and I applaud 👏 all parties working on it. I'm wondering the chances of the "Fix Our Forests Act" ultimately becoming law and, importantly, how impactful it would be if passed. Are the actions on target? 🎯 From the TD World story posted here, the FOFA purports to streamline regulation and response as follows: ✅ Simplify and expedite environmental reviews to reduce costs and planning times for critical forest management projects while maintaining rigorous environmental standards; ✅ Reduce the amount of frivolous litigation that delays urgent forest management projects; ✅ Promote federal, state, tribal, and local collaboration by creating a new Fireshed Center and codifying the Shared Stewardship initiative; ✅ Make communities more resilient to wildfire by establishing a Community Wildfire Risk Reduction Program and a Community Wildfire Defense Research Program, and; ✅ Allow federal land managers to use emergency authorities to carry out landscape-scale projects management projects on the most at-risk firesheds. #FixOurForestsActs is supported by numerous entities including utilities, conservation groups, and industry advocacy groups. This support alone seems pretty impressive. Will these efforts to streamline action move the needle? What other actions are needed? ENVIRONMENTALISTS SUED TO SAVE THE FORESTS—FROM BEING SAVED… In 2007, the Sierra Club sued the U.S. Forest Service to block Categorical Exclusions (CE) for controlled burns under NEPA, claiming the process needed a 3.5-year EIS review. Because, obviously, bureaucracy is better than wildfire prevention. Controlled burns are essential to reducing fire risks. Fast forward: the John Muir Project in 2018 and the Center for Biological Diversity in 2021 pulled the same stunts, halting critical fuel reduction plans. Even Trump discussed the auspicious effect of cleaning the brush off the forest.
